HTC desire connection problems and battery issues - I found the solution

Thanks to the OP for posting that.
This is just one of too many problems to list with my HTC handset, which I ought to send off to trade in pretty quick since I just tried to smash it to bits on the edge of a book case. Sadly perhaps, it survived.
That's a Touch 2 which is about 18 months old. And has precisely the same issues as the OP in addition to the battery having failed.
Was considering an HTC with Android, not Windows Mobile. But I think I'll steer clear of HTC for good now.0 -
Sorry for the delayed reply to the few posts above. I hadnt been regularly visiting this site since my last post months ago, hence the delayed reply.
The GSM PRL auto setting just does the auto PRL switching and nothing else. PRL= preffered roaming list. The network providers have agreements with each other where if they dont have good reception in an area then they have an arrangement with preffered roaming provider which is what the PRL setting is about as far as i understand. When the parent provider signal is lost THEN The PRL setting automatically kicks in and switches to latch on to a signal provided by the PRL provider which as i understand is usually a slower signal like Edge or GPRS (E or G mentioned on your phones) unlike the HSDPA or 3G (H or 3G) signals from your parent provider. So data speeds will be a lot slower when it is utilising the PRL signal but will be fast if it can get your parent providers 3G or HSDPA signal. If on GPRS or EDGE signal of PRL provider then use a browser like opera mini to get faster browsing or disable flash on the browser settings. The opera mini compresses by about 90% the data so it will be faster but I wouldnt use it for banking access etc as it gets compressed elsewhere. Hope this answers the data speed issues mention in some posts above.
The PRL setting is there on most phones (other than iphones as far as i am aware) so other makes affected by similar issues can try out this setting, but the codes that need to be punched in are different but can easily be found on the net via google.
Sorry for the late reply once again. Have a nice day.
ps: Please note that PRL setting has nothing to do with roaming (like when abroad). I have never been billed for roaming via PRL setting in the UK since I have used this setting for over a year now. Will soon upgrade in a couple of months and will buy a samsung galaxy s2 or a better phone if released by then. Saying bye bye to HTC as their latest HTc Sensation has lower internal memory than a year old samsung galaxy s. Those having the low internal memory alerts on android will know how much this bugs. Ofcourse i know one could use the sdk method or root and other roms to get rid of the problem but i would rather have a stock phone (without carrier branding) that doesnt have this low internal memory problem which a 32gb microsd card will not get rid of (for those who dont know what i am refeffering to).bubblesmoney :hello:0 -
I have everything wrong with my phone stated. Including the dbm settings.
But the issue is 3 network will not admit problems. They have said problem is with handset & are trying to pass liability to HTC. Yet they havent admitted the signal in my area is -113. THEY say thats ok.0 -
I've had a connectivity problem ever since I got an HTC software update a few weeks back, where I didn't have problems dialling out just people telling me that my phone was unreachable, I'd could call out easily but for some reason the network couldn't find me for incoming calls and texts.
Your "fix" has definitely helped the signal strength but only time will tell whether it has cured the issue of frequently missed calls.
Thanks for the info bubblesmoney

Well i've found your posting very informative... as i too have had constant signal drop problems at various locations with my HTC desire on Vodafone which i never experienced with my old sony ericcson handset. Have spoken to vodafone and they have agreed to look and repair it. I'll update when it's returned.0

get in touch with HTC - the motherboard likely needs replacing - known fault on early HTC Desires.
Also for everyone else, look out for software release 1.47 its got a significant bug with the main signal on the phone, will lose signal in sleep mode, won't reconnect to the network etc etc. o2 are due to patch this month, HTC, who originally denied it existed have admitted and are working on a fix. 1.28 is the last known good o2 build.0 -

Depending on the age of the handset, the switching itself off and overheating was a general problem with a batch of motherboards I believe. If you still have warranty, contact HTC.0 -
Awesome. I think you just saved me from upgrading my htc desire HD. Post 33 rocks!0
