thanks a million!
it didnt work first time on GSM auto PRL so I went to GSM only and it went full signal! then I changed it to GSM auto PRL and it worked a treat I have gone from -111 and asu of 0-2 to -99 to asu of 7
thanks0 -
thanks for the feedback that the PRL setting is working for many of you. sometimes when you switch off the phone or it totally goes out of charge or you do a software update, then it might revert back to stock setting. in that case you might need to do the setting changes again. anyway the signal is a lot better after the froyo and subsequent updates on my phone and i dont have to often rely on the PRL setting.bubblesmoney :hello:0

Hi, I have followed this thread with great interest and it’s helped me out loads. But I’m still getting a certain problem and I’d like your input on it (bubblesmoney).
I have followed your instructions on post 33 and in good signal areas (have also downloaded an app on my home screen to view signal strength better) and I have to say that putting it on GSM PRL made my signal go through the roof! Not sure if it has saved me much battery power but I think the battery is better than before.
Here comes my problem. When I’m at home, signal doesn’t appear to be so good (as shown on the O2 signal strength map). However, I can get G and E easily and “normal” signal (the signal for calls and texts) is 2 to 3 bars. However, should I get a H signal (which I can do), it seems to affect my “normal” signal, putting it down to one bar or no signal. Why is this happening? Surely the “normal” signal should have priority over the data signal and why is it killing my data signal? I have tried it on GSM Only and I get decent signal as before when it is on G or E as when on GSM PRL and obviously it never goes to H. I would love to have it on GSM PRL as this seems the best one to use and uses H where available. I don’t particularly want to have to mess around with changing option every time I am at home. Like I said, it works fine in the GSM PRL mode when G or E on the data which I’m more than happy with. It’s just when it goes to H it kills my “normal” signal.
Any help or suggestions please. I am on O2 and got the HTC Desire straight from them three weeks ago and this is the only major beef I have with this phone, other than that this phone rocks! Battery life isn’t fantastic (I had a SE W810i before on Tesco pay as you go, which I should mention I got perfect signal at home and they use O2 masts), but then this isn’t a phone, it’s a mini laptop and if I didn’t spend so much time on the internet (I don’t have internet at home) then battery life would be better. Oh, and I would recommend to anyone to download the Opera internet app as it compresses websites up to 90% which means everything is still pretty fast even with a G connection.
Most posts and threads I have read on this subject aren’t actually to do with the problem I’m having I don’t think. Getting data signal fine, and when data signal I low at home, “normal” signal is fine. I played badminton last night and went to check my phone and it was displaying -57dBm!
Many thanks in advanced! :j

Thanks bubbles for the heads up. I've just made the switch to prl and it seems to have improved my problems with 3g lag. Whenever I use the mobile internet, it lags by a few seconds (sometimes indefinitely) as my desire changes from a 3g signal to a H, before websites download. Now it jumps to H much more quickly. I'm on orange0

My Desire HD is sending me round the bend! Its on 3 and it constantly keeps dropping calls to the extent where I have put my SIM back into my old Cedar and am just using the Desire for internet/apps etc. Im payin 2 contracts so dont really mind but its just a bit annoying.*The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200

Excellent! Works a treat. Just about to send the thing back to Orange.
Many thanks.

Thank you bubblesmoney.
I just up-graded to HTC Desire S on O2 (through car phone warehouse) on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon.
Have been with O2 for years as only provider with any real signal quality in this area. I was gutted when I got my new phone home to find it wouldn't well, phone! Everything else was great and kids were enjoying Angry Birds all weekend. Took 1st handset back to Carphone Warehouse who swapped it for another Desire S but got home to find same problem.
I went back again today after another 3 days and was advised I may not be able to have a smart phone at all!! I was contemplating a return to just a phone but the shop was having computer problems, so I came home to look on the web to see if there was anyway I could boost the O2 signal (no it is illegal), or find another smart phone with better reception (still not sure one exists) and then I came across your thread started in June last year.
THANK YOU.
1st I took of the free cover I blagged by playing one shop off against another (in a moneysavingexpert stylie!) and got a slight increase in signal, (just because something is free doesn't make it good - lesson learnt there!!)
My dBm was -111 asu 4 but sometimes, levels not even registered and I had a little 'x' on the signal bars and a little '0' under signal strength, so presume pretty awful!. I then read on and changed to GSM auto PRL. My readings have got better - 91 - 103 dbm 5 -11 asu - and I am hoping my Time Without signal increases from the 50% it was today.
I actually called Carphone Warehouse back and read out how to change the settings as the person in the shop was having similar problems and he was amazed. (There was even talk of a memo to the Regional office to advise staff on this as there are lots of poor reception area's locally. )
Apart from the fact that the phone wasn't a phone, I love the Desire S and by reading an acting on your advice, I can keep it for the 24 month contract I have just signed without the legal wrangling I was potentially facing.
What I can't understand is that your posts were last year. We are now May 2011 almost a year after the problem was logged and I have the 2.3.3. version and the handset still has the problem. Why don't HTC just issue a report to all front line sellers so this can be simply rectified or at least tried by sellers.
Anyway, once again, thank you.

Does the fix in post #33 work for the Desire HD? I'm after new phone, whcih will be my first smartphone, and the HD is on the shortlist, but in several reviews I've read, they all state the terrible battery life as a major drawback to an otherwise excellent phone. Has anyone tried the fix for their HD, and does it work? Can anyone tell me what the HD is is like in general, is it a good option, or should I go for something else? I was looking at the Son Ericsson Xperia Arc as well, but that has been out of stock for ages due to the situation in Japan, and I've heard SE support and upgrades are terrible. Any feedback that would help? Thanks0

I have just tried the settings change and it does improve phone signal a lot. However it seems to have slowed down the data signal, I haven't been able to try this at other locations yet. Is this a problem or is it something that will be OK somewhere else0
