DMP Mutual Support Thread - Part 7

Hi there - it's been a long time since I said hello- although I'm always lurking and wishing everyone good luck on their DMP journeys - hope you have all had a fab Easter with too much chocolate, wine and general merry making in the sun! My DMP is all going to plan - 18 months down, 16 months to go - getting there slowly slowly....but more than half paid off now - yayayayay :j
I finally plucked up the courage to tell my fiancee about my DMP. He was really shocked (he is of the "neither a borrower nor a lender" school - only wish I had met him years ago before I got into this mess!) but has been amazing! Is v proud of me for having the guts to sort it out - and can't quite believe I have managed to keep this hidden from him for so long (have been on DMP 18 months now) - has made him worry what else I have hidden from him (:rotfl:I told him to watch out for the bodies of ex boyfriends in the loft). Overall though he was upset that I hadn't told him sooner as he thinks he could have helped (have tried to explain that I wanted to sort it out myself and not involve anyone else) but understands that it's a tough thing to bring up with someone - especially someone like him who really doesn't understand how anyone can get into debt in the first place. Overall though he has been fantastic and so supportive - and it's made him realise why I am so ridiculous about cutting out vouchers etc. He's promised to help me (not with money - I don't want him to help in any way this is my mess to fix) with making sure we plan meals better, use vouchers, nights in instead of nights out etc. I can't believe it has taken me so long to tell him and WHAT A RELIEF it's all out in the open!!
One question I have is about joint accounts...we don't have any joint finances as the moment - and I don't want one until I have sorted and finished my DMP, but he wants to add me to his car insurance and also his company private health insurance plan (both of which will save me a few ££) - does anyone know if this would link us financially in any way. I know my credit is shot to pieces for ever more but I don't want to mess with his in any way.
Any advice gratefully received.
Hope you're all well and looking forward to (hopefully) another sunny bank holiday!!

I wouldn't pay them the arrears, not sure how you tell them though.
You could explain you're on the DMP, and that you can't afford anything other than what you're currently paying them. One thing to remember is that if you were to pay the arrears, a few months down the line they'll be asking for the arrears again.
Thanks for that. You are right.
I am going to write and tell them that I have taken advice and since making that offer, more creditors (who I owe more to, as it happens) have accepted so I feel it would be unfair to offer them more. I will however up my payment from £25 to £50 as I am coming to an end with my car payments, so I have more money to share out.
If they want to give me a CCJ ....let them. Hopefully compensation will be through by then. If not, it doesn't matter, my credit file is wrecked for six years anyway.
They are so ridiculously aggressive compared to most so will try and offer the lowest F&f to them:T when the money comes through0 -

Hi Fraggle
Really glad you have 'come out' so to speak, and been able to open your heart (and your finances) to your other half.
It's such a difficult thing to do, but it's hell trying to live with a huge secret like a DMP, without sharing it. Good on yer!
Sorry though I have no answer to your question. My gut feeling is no; it shouldn't make a difference, but I don't know for sure.
If you're with a DMP company could you give them a ring for clarification?
Happy coupon snipping - any reductions/freebies/offers are much welcomed in this house too

Hello to all,
Wishing everyone a good weekend. I hear there's some big 'do' going on in London this Friday
I have been very brave today and phoned a creditor for the 1st time in the history of my DMP - swoon! (Ian would be proud of me) I am a committed letter writer.
One of my creditors was threatening the usual doom and gloom actions because they hadn't had a response to their last letter (which I never received.)
Soooo - because of the delay in post at the moment, I plucked up the courage and spoke to a real, live person.
She was absolutely lovely, instantly grasped the situation and put in place a solution, whilst outlining clearly what had happened. We even ended up having a more 'personal' sort of chat, and were getting like a house on fire.
I did of course keep a note of names, dates, times and will follow up with a letter.
But I just wanted to back up what Ian always says - it DID get straight to the heart of the matter, and wasn't anything at all like the fearsome experience I dreaded it might be.
So maybe the lesson learnt is don't be frightened to phone. Keep calm and friendly, have your facts/info/numbers to hand and it could work for you too

Exactly the same thing happened to me too. Received a letter from santander threatening all sorts and referring to a letter I hadn't received, so I rang them. So proud of myself, cos usually I would stick head in sand and panic instead of being proactive. The person I spoke to was lovely. Hopefully now they will stop applying interest and charges.0

Yes I do..... in my case it took 3-4 months...debt passed on to their inhouse collection dept...with interest frozen...did not say for how long...0 -
Hi Everyone, I thought I would join this thread as I have have decided to set up a DMP with CCCS.. I sent my forms back last week and have just written to all my creditors explaining that I am going on a DMP. I keep getting calls on my mobile from Santander but when I answer there is a message saying I could not be connected......hmmmm I am scared what they are going to say if and when i do eventually get to talk to someone. Can anyone say how long it takes for CCCS to process all the forms etc and get going? what happens next I am wondering.
Anyway I hope to speak to you all regularly as I have no other support except here now.0 -

Hi Londonfraggle, I'm glad you're getting on so well with your DMP.
Regarding car and health insurance, I'm almost certain that as long as he is the policy holder there would be no problem. It might just be worth giving your DMP company a ring to check though.
Hope everyone has a nice extended weekend
