  • Hi Mom

It's a pain isn't it? They will call from a variety of known and unknown numbers so you can't really track it effectively that way. You need to rethink your strategy

Often if you do 1471 and just type the number into google it will tell you who it is.

Do you have an answer machine? If it was important would friends and family leave a message there?

Have you sent your letters off recorded delivery asking them to acknoledge you have requested you have contact in writing only?

Let us know how you get on.

    Hi HH
    Thanks for your quick response.
I don't have an answering machine, maybe worth investing in one.
I haven't sent out the "contact in writing only" letters yet as i am so early into the DMP that i didn't expect the phone calls so soon and maybe i am just being paranoid.
Thanks for the tip re google i will try that
As most of the debts are in OH'S name they prob won't speak to me anyway!
Thanks again don't think i could do this without this site:o

In addition to google, you could try www.saynoto0870.com It's more for if you need to phone the creditor, but it may have their number on there.

  • just an update, I am just waiting for CCCS to confirm that our dmp is set up I did email them last week as I dont think everything will be set up in time for this month so may have to start dmp in January.

I am going to send token payments to all creditors this month but have now had a letter from Barclaycard as I am a bit in arrears (only by £200) and they are already threatening to send my account to Mercers and are saying they will send them round to my house:eek:

Oh my god, I cannot allow that to happen it will send my OH over the edge as he suffers from ME, depression and stress. Are these bully boy tactics? are barclaycard just trying to scare me?

Think I need to call CCCS and tell me about this I am really worried now. Have i done the right thing???

    JC:(
LBM: April 2009 - honest debt figure: Secured: £0.00!! (paid back april 2017) unsecured: £53117.48 (roughly) back with CCCS starting again:(

I really do believe that communication makes a difference. I also believe your debt free date makes a difference. That is to say, perhaps someone with a 10 year dfd, maybe more likely to have their interest stopped, than someone with a 5 year dfd.

But, perhaps I'm clutching at straws here!

Couldn't agree with you more Ian - communication is a powerful thing.
Bite the bullet and TALK to your creditors (either by phone or letter.) Let them know you are doing your best and are obligated to clear your debt with them.
I also think you're well on course with the DFD. One of my 3 creditors is Barclaycard (I see lots of angst with them recently from others) but they have been fine with me. Default from one creditor, interest still being added by the third. My DFD is currently running about 14 years :(

Firstly take a deep breathe and calm yourself! :)
Then go back a page or two and read my post to ellie7 re:threats of sending/powers of debt collectors.
And YES you are doing the right thing. The start up of a DMP is often the most frightening and difficult part. There is no set pattern (as per recent posts.) But YES again; better than the life you were trying to live before.
Keep reading this thread and learn. Some folk here are just in the same position as yourself with the same worries and fears.
It always takes a while to settle. In the meantime look to your own health as well as OH. Keep in touch with CCCS and creditors. Don't become a victim of a debt - take control :)

    Hiya TF!
Would the 'merry band' be Santa's grotty grotto? Those of us who won't be buying i-Pads, Wii's or 4 wheel drive BMWs as Christmas presents? (Put it on the plastic!!! :D)
But our own very exclusive cash-only clan who spend the little we have, or try make something special to share with our loved ones at this special time? :heart2:
I've got a glass of sherry (:o) so declaring an early Christmas here in the frozen North!

Thank you for that lovely Christmas Tree, it really cheered me up!!:j
Braved the other bit of the "frozen North" over here yesterday and used a voucher Sainsburys (ironic or what) sent me for £8 off a £40 shop. They had 25% off their kids clothes, so got quite a few prezzies for Xmas, and enough food to feed us for at least 3 days!
Am feeling very pleased with myself, I really don't know why I got into such a flap last year, with so many to buy for. It just goes to show that 15 months in (!) things settle down, and what was a real headache at the start gets a lot easier. Maybe I'm just 'in the zone' finally!!
We will get there in the end. All of us.

  • My OH has continued to receive phonecalls all over the weekend from Mercers so..... we have bitten the bullet and phoned them back:eek: OH gave me authority to speak to them and it has paid off! I explained everything to them re: CCCS, letters etc. etc. and I went through our I&E with them. They have now agreed to stop ringing and writing and will accept our reduced payments:)

I am so happy and I owe it all to you lovely people, without your support I would not have been able to make this call and I wouldn't have had the knowledge to deal with them.

A BIG BIG THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP:T

    Ellie xx
That's great news, Ellie! I took Ians' advice at the start and took as many phone calls as I felt I could cope with. I think it's the fear of the unknown when the phone is ringing that is more frightening than picking the blooming thing up sometimes!!

Christ, don't take my advice, it's normally wrong!!!

And about your Sainsburys voucher, the highlight of my week last week was being handed a £5 off a £15 shop at the local Waitrose in Farringdon. Ok so that'd probably pay for a bar of chocolate, but hey, it'd be a treat!
