Why are you bringing up the subject of benefits? There has been no mention of them from the OP so it could be safe to assume that none are being claimed or expected.

I think it's also safe to assume that this young couple with a new baby and a partner that is working part time will be claiming some sort of benefit, be it now or in the very near future

Totally irrelevant as it is but NO- my tennant has just had payments suspended and is under investigation from LHA (probably as they have found out her OH is living there with her and he is not meant to be but they cannot tell me the reason as that would beach her ''rights'')- so at the moment once again she is living under my roof and working up greater arrears at my expense- and no the council will not let me evict her either as she has a baby under 1 year old . She did the smart thing- got pregnant!!

More fool me for taking the job route.........

To evict is YOUR decision, NOT the councils.

Still, you've had a few quid out of the good old taxpayer while it lasted, huh? The OP is a taxpayer too, so, far from YOU subsidising HER, it seems to have worked the other way.

A colleague has a 2 bed council flat in SE London, the rent is just under £400 per month. The private block opposite the rents are £900 per month. Cannot be the only example.

Well, I can as easily find examples wher social housing is more expensive than private. You will find, however, that the average differential isn't the figure you quoted. Not by a long way!

You are entitled to assume anything you like but the OP did not mention State benefits therefore I inferred that they were not relevant to the OP's initial enquiry. They still aren't as far as I can see.

If the pregnancy is not relevant to the OP, why was it mentioned.

    (sigh)

The pregnancy is, of course, relevant in terms of the overcrowding. But it's not relevent in the contaxt of some of the coments made as it cannot be changed. Is THAT clear enough? Or shall I get the crayons out?

You have examples of social rents being higher than private for a similar property in the same area? I find that very difficult to believe. If that is the case, why are the people staying in the social housing?

No- i am currently at a loss of over £2000

No- the council can (and have) overrule me as a landlord and instruct my tenant to stay put.

    Believe me I have tried.

I have learnt my lesson- I will have no choice but to discriminate harshly against any potential rentals who are LHA in the future- if I ever get her out of my property that is.

yep -so is retiring right now, having kids and totally living off the benefits system- silly me I should have thought of that ages ago!

I dont, or never have, claimed any benefits and I have paid tax since I left school! This has nothing to do with claiming benefits or tax payers money

It seems to me that some of the contributors to this thread should not be allowed anywhere near something as sharp as a crayon.

I am ''entitled'' to my opinion- its my money through my taxes which is funding your ''entitled'' living.

And what exactly is my 'entitled' living? My full time, taxed, job? Or the fact that im having a baby? I agree with you, you seem like a very bitter person...
