    Hi guys :)

I'm wanting to make some rosehip jelly. I have got some cooking apples too as I googled about a bit and the recipes I saw suggested putting cooking apples in aswell, but wondered if anyone has a tried-and-tested recipe they would recommend?

    Many thanks

Wow - I am so excited to have found this thread! I might have become a jam-making convert. Just got back from a visit to Seattle to see my family, my brother and I scavenged for blackberries, made up one load of jam before I left (I packed 5 small jars into my checked luggage - and all made it home safely - wrapped up in bubble wrap and socks :D), then picked another batch the morning I left, leaving him to make up that one on his own.

The jam is reeeally good. My brother thinks he has never bought a blackberry in his life, which at age 50 isn't doing too badly. On Saturday we picked blueberries and I made two very yummy pies - the taste was so good I would have gladly gone back and picked more to make blueberry jam too - oh well, next summer maybe?

Have I missed blackberries here in the South East or are there some left (that none of you have found already that is ;))? Are there any good U-pick places for anything at the moment or coming up in the South East?

Have told DH that we're now collecting jars instead of putting them in the recycling (dang, the recycling collection was this morning ). Thanks for the idea of posting on freecycle for the jars too.

Thanks all for the ideas and inspiration. I'll print out fc's strawberry jam recipe for next year.

Still loads of strawberries in the shops. Made another batch of fc's last week:j . Yesterday it was onion marmalade. Have got a marrow ready for making marrow chutney.

I use eaters to make Tarte Tatin with shop bought (frozen) puff pastry. I had such a glut last year that DS and DD complained they were fed up of Tarte tatin!

Just waiting the 15 mins for my blackberry jam to cool before I start putting it into jars. Spent a couple of hours blackberrying at Symonds Yat on the way home from Bank Holiday break on Tuesday. Didn't think I'd got many, but have so far made 2 crumbles and am now making jam with 1kg. And there's still more! Will probably freeze the rest as DH loves blackberry crumble and custard.

Am now onto marrow chutney with the marrow that we were given from an allotment. Never made it before and hoping that it turns out ok.
  • chrisfh - let us know how your marrow chutney turns out!

I've never made chutney before but would be willing to give it a go, as when it's tasty it makes sandwiches etc. so much better.

    thanks,

    saf

ps - just saw yours about blackberrying - well done on that! I wonder if there are more out there that haven't been washed out by the rain? we were driving back from south wales yesterday and I kept noticing the blackberry vines all over the place, but couldn't tell if there was any fruit or not.

ooh, that's the one I posted!! :T I am really pleased that it worked well for you, I have made three or four batches now, but we seem to be able to get through a jar a week  I love it and think its the best thing you can do with a marrow!

My mum had some of it with a hot lamb curry and rice, as she had no mango chutney in and she said it went with that very well, but I tend to use it to liven up cheese sarnies or even better, cheese on toast!
