Before this gets out of hand, I thought tigtag's comment was simply a joke, specifically a re-run of the "space core directive" running gag from Red Dwarf series 6, hence the picture of Kryten in the reply.

The purpose of allocating the lanes contrary to what the highway code implies is to improve the flow of traffic.

Theres no point in drivers queuing in the left hand lane to go straight on when the right hand lane is empty. In such cases where few people are turning right the right hand lane is utilised as straight on.
The purpose is usually to hinder the flow of traffic.

Thank you Lum - it was and also thank you for taking it in the spirit it was intended.

Lanes that gyrate outwards (called "turbo roundabouts" in traffic engineer speak) are fantastic and work really well unless they are installed in an area full of old people who can't work them out.

With this kind of roundabout, and decent signage, then people need just enter the roundabout in the correct lane as depicted on the sign and they will be deposited at the correct exit without the need to worry about changing lanes mid roundabout.
The marked lanes tend to be too far off the smoothest line round the roundabout, so if there's nothing close to me I'll just ignore them and take the smoothest line.

I'll give them a second chance though.

Round my way they've taken to replacing 3 lane entrances with 2 lane entrances. I'd prefer all markings to be removed and everyone left to work it out for themselves.

    Oh.

It was when you called me a to$$er for the second time in the space of 15 minutes that I began to doubt whether or not you were looking for a reaction outa me or you were just socially autistic.

Oh yes there are plenty like that that are so badly designed you'd wrench your neck if you actually followed the designated line. They are awful because you end up with conflicts between people who dislike neck braces vs people following the technically correct line. As with any design standard, you can't account for idiots implementing it badly. There are some corkers around Newport, e.g. the A48 has several roundabouts that have 3 lane entrances onto a 2 lane roundabout.

Whilst it still has some flaws, this is a fairly good example of one that works. Particularly if you trace the routes of people heading north and leaving the M53 from the bottom of the image.

This will be my last comment on the thread, you obviously didn't take the OP (original pun) in the spirit that it was intended therefore arguing with you is a futile exercise.

Secondly, I suggest you read up a little on autism before you band the word about in a derogatory fashion!!

I really should rise above name calling but your quoted comment above proves my OP was actually correct in the way that you did take it!!

Perhaps people havent noticed they've implemented a change?

Also, if the traffic is busy the arrows on the road may by obscured by queuing cars. Have they erected a sign to indicate the directions of the lanes.... its diagram 877 from chapter 3 of the Traffic Signs Manual if I recall correctly.. ;)

there's a sign saying "new road layout ahead"

I was serious. Surely to define "left" on a roundabout, the 12 o'clock rule comes into play? It's also not clear if by "4 exits" they were including the one they are entering the roundabout from.

Technically we need a photograph of the diagram on the sign to determine which exits are "left".

oh god I started a riot :rotfl:

5 exits if you include the one I am entering from. Right, given I am useless with street maps I will use a clock

    first exit is at 8 o'clock, 2nd exit about 11 o'clock, 3rd exit at 2 o'clock and 4th exit at 5 o'clock

    any clearer?! (as mud!)

and to whoever said keep an eye out for idiots, I do, but at some point there's going to be a nasty smash, it was bad before, and I think they've made it worse with the new layout
