How much do I donate?

I've just returned from a classical music concert where although the admission price was £12 (Gould Piano Trio playing Mozart piano trios) the refreshments were on a donation only basis (probably to get round the licencing rules)
50 people drank red/white wine, ate delicous salmon canapes, quiches, volo vents, cakes and other numerous tasty snacks. The donation plate totalled £45.
I think there is a difference between moneysaving and being mean minded.
Stingyness really isn't cool.
If people want a cultural life surely they can put their money where their mouth it? I think there are times when we should make sure that we don't abuse the generousity of our hosts. If we want charities/music sponsors to exist, we really have to get out of the "What the least I can possibly pay for this mentality."My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

We adopted a kitten about amonth ago from the CPL and had to pay a £30 donation and to be honest, it's the best £30 I've ever spent. She is currently sleeping on my arm so i'm typing 1 handed (the other one has gone COMPLETLEY dead!!!) and she is such a peach! Post piccies if you can........!May the fleas of a thousand camels infest the crotch of the person who screws up your day and may their arms be too short to scratch...:D0

This is one area where moneysaving can go a bit far - yes, you can get things cheaper in a pet shop, but the animals will not have been socialised, or have had nearly a pleasant life as those in rescue centres where people are paid pittances but work there because they love and care for the animals.
I used to volunteer and our policy was always -
Our suggested minimum donation for one of our cats or kittens is £60 (£100.00 if adopting a pair)
Donations made by adopters are a vital contribution to our funds. They are not compulsory, as a good home is the first consideration for our animals. Our adopters almost invariably wish to make a donation at the time of adoption however, and the above suggestion represent approx. half the average cost to our charity of preparing each cat for rehoming, although many do cost the charity a lot more due to health and other problems. We try our best to give all animals in our care whatever help they need. Therefore larger donations are always much appreciated
If you are not comfortable with making a donation, please consider the effect this will have on the charity’s ability to help other animals in need in the future. Please also consider your ability to meet the considerable ongoing expenses that responsible animal care represents. These matters should be discussed with us before the adoption proceeds.0 -
we have adpoted 5 cats and we always gave a min of £25 per cat, plus a few tins of food.
as for names. our old boy ( he passed away last years sadly ) was named smokey . but he was named when we got him. we named our two girls cats One is sasha and the other sabrina. and our other 2 cats were named when we got them. they are barry and jeffery. not very catty names but they suit the cats perfectly.0 -
I 'inherited' two cats from a friend who went to live abroad. They drive me bonkers - scratch and miaow from dawn to dusk. Have just taken out pet insurance but not sure if necessary or do people just keep their fingers crossed. Not had a big pet before0

Hi planbetter,
I'm looking at pet insurance for my kitten at the moment, as she was only insured for six weeks by the animal shelter. I think it's worth it as she's already a member of the family so I'd feel I'd have to stump up whatever it cost to get her any treatment she needed. I know some people self insure by putting a bit into a separate 'pet' account every month, but I'd rather not take the risk.
At the moment the best quote I've had is M&S. Have you read Martins article Pet Insurance Cost Cutting System?
Also take a look at the Insurance & Life Assurance board. Here are some recent threads on there:

Your cats are probably missing their owner, I hope that they settle down for you soon.

Edit: Whoops! Just realised that you have already taken out insurance...I'll leave this post here anyway just in case it's of any use to somebody else.0 -
we have never taken out any insurance , as for 4 cats would be pricey. but we got told it best to just put £20 - £30 aside each month so if a cat does need anythng then we have some saved.0

We do that with our 4 - it's called the Cat Repair Fund
names - we have Molly, Eddie (he suits Edward better because he is very haughty, he thinks he's pedigree but he's not, he was conceived behind our garage and his mum Molly is just a sweet little moggie) Patch because he looks like the Sheepdog dog that John Noakes had and lastly theres Max0 -
well we have our kittens at home now:j
They are absolutely lovely, and have been named Maggie and Marge.
The Lady at the CPL who reared them along with the mother cat is called Margaret!
We donated £30.00 in the end, and have also signed ourselves up for a continous monthly donation, as we have to have the boosters done on the 14th September:eek:
We also need to get them neutered in around 3-4 months and we are taking out pet insurance, just to be on the safe side.0 -
When I work out how to add a pic from my pc i will put one up0
