Aberdeen. April 2010 £175,908 vs April 2009 £154,718 +13.6% Year on Year
Edinburgh April 2010 £214,611 vs April 2009 £193,991 +10.6% Year on Year
Scotland April 2010 £151,539 vs April 2009 £140,429 +7.9% Year on Year
Now also higher than the same months in 2007 (peak year) and have been every month this year so far.
Aberdeen April 2007 £152,317, vs £175,908 today. A £23,591 gain in just 3 years.
Edinburgh April 2007 £200,609, vs £214,661 today. A £14,052 gain in just 3 years.
Scotland April 2007 £144,204 vs £151,539 today. A £7,335 gain in just 3 years.
By the time you add in rental costs and low interest rates, the renter could be close to £50,000 worse off than someone who bought in 2007.
The McBears will be crying themselves to sleep tonight......

Why do you like rubbing it iin for renters. I believe the vast majority would buy if they could, but for various reasons are unable to. Seems a bit like laughing at a person in a wheelchair because they cannot run as fast as you. Bit sick really.0 -

I don't think that's true, all the bears here earn over 100k a year and have thousands of pounds in the bank. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

The vast majority that post here could have bought anytime prior to 2007 with a 100% mortgage if need be. But chose not to, as they wanted to see our "crumbling piles of bricks" devalue so they could pick up a "cheapo house".
Remind me again, what's that German word for Schadenfreude....;)“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

He's not mocking those that rent. He's mocking those that rent waiting in belief that house prices will fall.
Certainly in the Aberdeen area, property is affordable to those on average wages.
Average Male Mean Average = £39,018

You Scots are so lucky. Never-ending prosperity just through the ownership of a humble pwoperdee.
And, just think, whilst some potential househunters South of the border will be otherwise occupied worrying about the world cup in the next few weeks entrepeneurial Scots will be out and about looking to snap up housing bargains, no doubt pushing prices up even further.
A serious point, though - where do these figures come from? The Halifax had Scotland, at the end of Q1 2010, down 12% down from Q1 2008, 8% down from Q1 2006. Hamish's numbers look like, well, like implausible rubbish to me.FACT.0 -

Either way, the pleasure Hamish seems to take is quite sad. Has a middle-aged man not got anything better to do? I can understand that a mid-life crisis of some sort is affecting him, but still.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
