A 1.6FSI will do 70 all day and be comfortable enough. In these times of economy, why buy a fuel gulper or one thats over complicated/more likely to break down?
The diesel is more bomb-proof than petrol but neither have major issues, or be fuel gulpers. The 140bhp could get you 70mpg, let alone do 70mph all day long on a run, so IMHO is the better buy along with the extra torque you get from the diesel.

    Are you VAT registered?

If so, buy/lease a car derived van instead of wasting money on a car for business use.
