Ridiculously fast :D and surprisingly good on MPG, but with the extra mileage i'd be more tempted to stick to the others, unless you're a speed freak

I know. I have to drive around with cruise control on most of the time to avoid getting carried away (and taken away!)

we're all speed freaks aren't we? yeah ive driven the 170 and its like the preverbial off a shovel!

Think i'm going to go with option 1 as its also got full leather interior which for comfort reasons will do me nicely. The only problem is im trying to get the Boston VW to buy it from the Huddersfield VW but they're saying that in order to do this i would have to put a deposit down and also be obliged to have the car unless there's a major defect. Would you advise that i actually went across to Hudds VW myself to avoid doing this and being able to test drive it before making a decision
Maybe ask if Boston VW if they've got a similar 140bhp spec'd Mk5. If you at least see the spec (in a Golf Plus/Touran/Passat) you can get an idea, the only thing the test drive sorts out is if it's got enough juice for you and feels nice on the road!

what about checking for rattles etc though?

You'll have a 1year warranty with any sale anyway, plus (potentially) some of the 3year dealer warranty. Maybe ask the Hudds VW place if it's still under VWs warranty, but we do a PDi (pre-delivery inspection) on every sales car that includes those kind of checks anyway, so i'd hope they'd be flagged before sale.

whats your opinion on re-mapping tdi's?

If you've got 140bhp, what do you want to remap for? It's better to remap the 140 than buy the 170 though (insider info, trust me!), but IMHO turns most people off when reselling. I'd keep it as standard as possible, and buy what you want 1st time rather than mod it up to suite what you want...

Audi may use the same engine, but the issues and ancillaries are totally different. I have worked at VW for 6years and can count the number of oil coolers we have sold on ANY VW on one hand, so doubt very much that would be a problem.

And if the OP is planning to do 30-35k p/yr, why have 4 services a year rather than 2? The car will still get checked every 6months or so, but with the 10k service it may be every 3months which is an extra day off the road each quarter. Stick to posting about something you know about

    Why?
So you're selling a 4 year old car with 140K on, and a history of oil changes every 10K miles, rather than something with sludge in the sump for half it's life.
True or not, it's the perception that counts.

The way the Longlife regime works, is by the sensors on the engine keeping the oil quality above a certain tolerance, and burning off any 'dirty' oil so that it can easily reach the 20k without compromising the efficiency and cleanliness of the engine. No sludge, no compromise, just a sensible time gap between services rather than coming in every couple of months!

The service regime is hardly the 1st selling point. If a customer is buying a car with 140k on the clock, they will more than happy to see full VW service history, as they will be looking at the sale with eyes open knowing the mileage.

    That's where we disagree.
140k on a diesel they'll be looking for regular oil changes, not relying on the electronics in the engine to look after it.
Whether it's VW service history on not doesn't matter, no warranty left, so any stamp will do.

Let's agree to disagree then. The checks done by a VW technician will be infinately more specific than a jack of all trades mechanic, who one week has to look at Chryslers, the next Nissans, then Fiat/VW etc. You cannot build up a good knowledge of any 1 brand seeing that many different cars and as such cannot do the job to the same standard.

If a car has OE service history I would buy it over 'any old stamp' type service history EVERY day of the week.
