TiThe......i've been looking on auto trader and spotted a couple that are being sold by car dealers (not VW) would you advise against this over buying from VW or is it not an issue?

I will have slightly rose tinted spectacles about that  IMHO you will get better quality on delivery, better service and a nationwide group of dealers to look after you and the car if there were any issues rather than just the guys you bought it from.

What warranty deal do VW give on used cars?
3 years old will be at the end of VW warranty, so compare that to a private dealer, for the difference in price.

All VW cars come with a 1year warranty from the date of sale, which is why they go through a stringent PDI check and ours even get an MOT, service and cambelt (if due) before sale...I bet the Autotrader guys wouldn't bother and then you could end up with a £300-400 bill within a couple of months of owning the car!

    Hi

Good to have a VAG insider on the board..

I can vouch for Golfs as mine is 1992 Mk3 1800 petrol, has close on 100k and is bomb proof apart from a few rusty spots which im not excited about. However,i was considering a swap for a newer petrol model and was thinking 1.6 FSI as i am not into splashing big bucks on new cars so would be looking for a good used example.

    Any views on the FSI?

My Golf is far from being powerful,,its a plodder and does it well and i am content to plod also..even at 60-70 on mways.

Are there any 1,6fsi issues i need to look for??

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Not that I'm aware of specific to the FSi. A couple of generic faults that if the vehicle is at least a couple of years old should have been sorted. If you can get a chain driven FSi then you'll save the Cambelt service every 4years too

I had a mk2, paint was bad on that as well, lots of small rust spots that came through from under the paint.
    Very german car.
I changed it for a 2.0l Fiat Tempra, much more fun to drive, no rust 10 years later when I sold it.

back again guys. I've found one that i like but its a 170bhp. With doing 30k a year should i stay away from this model or does the greater driving overpower the lower fuel economy?

If you've got 140bhp, what do you want to remap for? It's better to remap the 140 than buy the 170 though (insider info, trust me!), but IMHO turns most people off when reselling. I'd keep it as standard as possible, and buy what you want 1st time rather than mod it up to suite what you want...
The 170bhp engines are not quite as reliable as the 140...

A 1.6FSI will do 70 all day and be comfortable enough. In these times of economy, why buy a fuel gulper or one thats over complicated/more likely to break down?
