I use students for bank/holiday work. I like to recruit them at 18 and then it is worth training them as they work for at least three years. My students are great, do lots of hours and are very flexible. The ones at local uni who work in term time get a bit stressed at exam time so I know they won't do so many hours then. I know students are struggling this summer, I have taken on more than usual and shared the work out which seemed fair, they seem happy with it anyway.

finding casual summer work is HARD.

Thining about it, 100 000 students go back for the summer all looking for work.. its not surprising people cannot find work

    My tuppence worth -
I'm back at Uni to retrain as a teacher after I was made redundant from a job I loved - 11 years as the manager of a bookshop.

1st year - worked 16 hrs per week in a branch of The Works - shop closed down, lost my job.

2nd year - worked in a cafe on campus for 12 hrs per week, also on a placement in school. Cafe doesn't open over the summer so that job ended mid-may, although luckily will resume in September.

Since my last exam at the end of May I have applied for over 20 jobs, had 2 interviews, was rejected for both. These jobs ranged from customer service to cleaning to childcare. I have experience of all three, along with lots of other occupations.
My friend who works for the DWP says that in this part of the country every job advertised is getting in the region of 75 - 100 applicants.
I am not lazy, I have a wealth of experience, I am fully flexible (my daughter is now 15 and I have never mentioned that I have family commitments in an interview) and yet I can't find a job.
Please try not to be so judgemental people, I can only imagine how difficult it is for those with no experience if I myself am struggling to get work.
I am lucky enough to be entitled to HB over the summer as I have a child, but other than that I am living off £50 p/w tax credits and letting debts accrue until I can pay them off with my first loan instalment in late September. When you consider my last instalment was on the 7th of May, you can understand how long a period that is to get by. I get £470 per month student loan, and there is no way I could save any of that for the summer break.
I am not ranting here, I fully understood the financial implications of taking on my degree, but I think it's unfair to adopt the attitude of 'get a job'. More often than not, it's just simply not happening for some people, and not through lack of trying.
Good luck to all those looking, hopefully something will come along to see you through until next semester.
Come ride with me, through the veins of history...
I'll show you how God falls asleep on the job.

Support work with people with psychiatric problems. We are really popular with psychology undergraduates. Also have some social work and nursing students but they often have alot of placements so can do less work.

    Hi Penny,
Did you really get JSA? I applied and was turned down. What do you think I should do? I am also a lone parent with one year left at uni and two dependent children. Can someone please help me?
