i have done loads of jobs throughout my academic career, call centres are a good option: the money can be good and most of the ones ive worked in you can generally get away with doing uni work between calls, nothing substantially but ever little you get done at work is less you have to do when you get home
there are loads of jobs out there that students can do, its a case of getting out there and looking. every student has tales of crazy jobs theyve done. at one point i used to sell credit cards at the airport it was horrific, plus was commision only and no boss to ask for help, we were sent out and left to it......... i used to sit in the pub my partner worked and get everyone to sign up instead of going all the way out to the airport
You just need to do whatever to get by.......... plus the weirder the job the more of a laugh it can be, enjoy life your at uni, it will be over all too soon and we'll all need to join the real workd0 -
I ended up working in The Shining and that's no exaggeration. There was even a door with "Red Rum" scrawled on it!
Ahhh the best feel good movie ever..

I know employment levels are more difficult in certain parts of the country but I never understand how so many students say they CAN'T find jobs. You can, you're just not looking hard enough.
In all honesty, you have to knock yourself down a peg or two. Many of us take absolutely horrid jobs just to survive through Uni, but hell it's better than having to rely on other people.
I'm 23 next month and been in continuious employment since I was 16 as well as being a full time student throughout. It's honestly not that difficult, you will have to work unsociable hours, your social life will be effected...but thats worth it to me to know I'm not having to rely on the taxpayers of this country.
It's hard enough to find a job when you've left Uni, but trying to do that with no works experience what-so-ever? Well good luck with that.
Problem is many students get weekly EMA payments at College of anything from £10 to £30 (I didn't by the way, I was 6 weeks to old to apply) and when it comes to being paid in 3 lump sums over the year many can't budget it.
To sum up - No you can't claim dole money, you could give it ago I suppose, but if you get found out you will be classed as benefit fraud, and pay a hell of a lot more back other than the £500 you're likely to get off them over the summer.0 -
Threads like this do my head in.
All this sweeping generalisations about students wind me up to levels of which I cannot communicate to you over an internet forum.
Many many many students work over summer, and in crappy jobs mostly. Not all students are afraid of hard work so do not make such judgements.
Temp jobs are like gold dust. Most people who have jobs now either worked there during college and just go back for the holidays, or have lied about things saying they are taking a year out etc just to be considered for a job. It isnt easy! How many places want someone for 3 months? Few. I have been very lucky with getting work, but I know others who havent and they have literally tried hundreds of places. I have worked since I was 17 and applied to 63 places and got two interviews.
All this good luck with left etc isnt really needed when the question was can you claim money if you cant find a job. No way on hell is the student loan going to last you over summer without either parental or other help.0 -
me and partner on income support base icapacity,my sone get only alg, nothing else,i dont get no money for him and still have to support him,for the summer he was thinking of signing on there is no jobs around here to go for,so he is going to be gutted if he dosent qualify, unless he doesent tell them that he is going back to collage?buzzyy0

You've got to look at the big picture here - yes you can probably lie and sign on, but if you get caught it's a criminal record and how likely are you to get a decent job with FRAUD stamped all over your history?0

Right I am quite angry at some of the comments above! I am a student going into my third year, I worked from the age of 16 until i started university, as I could not get a job as not many places take on students! I come back home over the summer for the past two years where I have applied for every possible job and only recieved 2 interviews which neither I have got a job with. So dont go insulting students who are trying to better themselves to get a decent career and not go on the dull and have 5 kids which are paid by working people! I think you have been very insulting and it is not as easy to get a tempory job as it used to be 10, 20 or 30 years ago as you all well know! i just wish you luck if god forbid you ever lose your job or want to better your self and get insulted by every other person!0

You can't really say it is 'insulting' when you go and do the exact same thing. Not going to university doesn't mean you will spend your life on benefits and have a large family.
Although during this recession part-time jobs have been harder to come by, it is not impossible, especially if you are willing to work anywhere and do anything.0 -
believe me where i am from u either have children or u cant live as there are no jobs! and i go for every job whether its cleaning public toilets to working in fast food restaurants i try them all! so everyone needs to stop saying we dont try when we really do!0

It is quite funny that you say you find this thread offensive and then slag off people who are on the dole and have 5 kids.'Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans'-John Lennon
