Come on guys, it's not as if you don't get enough warning of holidays coming up. For someone to cope just fine on their loan until the instant they have a holiday is plain scrouger behaviour, and I really can't believe well educated kids are doing this. Mostly I can't believe how old this makes me feel. I only left university 3 years ago and no one I know would have ever though of claiming. Despite a lot of my friends really struggling with money.

Unfortunately it's not as simple as getting a job anymore... there are not nearly enough to go around! I've had over half a dozen jobs since I started my degree and I found them all relatively quickly albeit with a lot of hard work walking and talking to businesses. This summer in particular I know many people who have applied for dozens and dozens of summer jobs without any luck. Any permanent part time positions get bombarded with hundreds of applications too.

It takes organisation and determination to find work. I'm soon to be in full time education, yet have 2 part time jobs and am taking on more work soon. I worked 48 hours a week whilst in 6th form, to support myself, so it can be done. Being a student is about being independent; claiming jobseekers' allowance doesn't really tally in with this.

Funnily enough, as an employer we've been looking for *shock* summer temp staff, to cover up until September. The job wouldn't be brilliant, and consists mainly of data input.

We've had students in the past coming in, then leaving within a week because they think it's above them. Going from experience, it's therefore ok to make these judgements as I'd say it's happened with about 90% of our temps over the years.

Is this your LEA or would most LEAs be looking for people?

A fair few LEA's take on summer staff as it's the peak period. They're not given assessing work as it needs more knowledge. That said, with centralisation there's a chance most won't this year. Unfortunately, we've just lost another member of permanent staff, so may need to look at the budget and recruit. We've been getting by so far.

You've got to look at the big picture here - yes you can probably lie and sign on, but if you get caught it's a criminal record and how likely are you to get a decent job with FRAUD stamped all over your history?

A potential criminal record. The police aren't evil, nor are the CPS, they are more likely to give a student a slap on the wrist than a criminal record for mild fraud.
You can't really say it is 'insulting' when you go and do the exact same thing. Not going to university doesn't mean you will spend your life on benefits and have a large family.

Although during this recession part-time jobs have been harder to come by, it is not impossible, especially if you are willing to work anywhere and do anything.

Part times jobs increase during recessions. Part time contracts tend to be 7 hours, especially in retail and the like.

That's all well and noble, shame it goes against every educational academic. The more paid work you do the more your academic studies are affected. what is the point, to both the Government and more importantly yourself to spend a lot of money, alot of time on a degree if you jeopardize it working so much. I have plenty of time to pay society back for all I take when I've graduated.

But this thread is about getting benefits during the summer. Most universities give students four months off over the summer. Surely you're not suggesting that getting work over this time is going to seriously jepardise your studies?

I think he's talking about working 48 hours during college.

Why would you need to work that much to support yourself anyway?
That's an excessive amount of hours.
