Pregnancy's Best Kept Secrets

I am worried that people are being given vaginal examinations in the immediate post-natal period. There is no need for this to happen. In my 11 years as a qualified midwife i have never performed a vaginal examination on a newly delivered mum (or known for one to be performed on someone by any midwives or Drs)- that is so uncomfortable and so undignified. Everything that needs to be checked can be cheked by abdominal palpation and by having a look at the stitches. This is puzzling me as to why this should happen????
I think they mean when they do an internal just after delivery to check for any internal tears/ bleeding etc. I know it is protocol in the two hospitals in my locality.I love this board, have "virtually" met so many lovely people, people I am honoured to count as friends.

Bit late for me now!!!
From what I have read, I expect to be in the most excrutiating pain and loose all of my dignity, but it wont last too long (hopefully) and I just can't wait to meet our little baby when it is all over!
It took us 5 years to manage to get pregnant and because of my age (I am due to have this baby on my 35th birthday) I want to start trying straight away for our second, but from the sounds of it, I wont want hubby to come near me for quite some time after the birth?0 -
I am pretty sure for the first few weeks bumping uglys will be the last thing on your mind........
Good Luck, and keep us informed!!!!!
The gorgous sproglets on my profile are mine, gorgeous lumps of lovely(I can say that, they are both snoring their sweet heads off...no really, snore really bad)Oh....I'm not going to lie to you......At the end of the day, when alls said and done......do you know what I mean.........TIDY0 -

Well they certainly look gorgeous.
We would love to have two children and feel so fortunate to be finally pregnant!
I have been through so much heartache and emotional pain trying to get pregnant over the last 5 years that I said I would never complain about anything once I was pregnant! I will try and remember that when I am in labour hey!0 -

Glad it's been of help. Nobody told me half the stuff in here when I had my first baby, and I was scared by lots of things that happened to me afterwards which are perfectly normal. At least you're prepared and will be able to deal with the yukky stuff better than I did!
I'm mad enough to be expecting my third now, so I'll be going through it all again when (s)he arrives next month :eek:Here I go again on my own....0
