Oh this thread is fab! I have had a great laugh and a smile!

I didn't know the needle to break my waters was 13 feet long - omg that was big!

I didn't know that some babies don't come out crying - my DS didn't cry for ages and my heart was in my throat (I wish I knew that!)

I also didn't know that I should give my c scar a real good scrub and a wash!! I was so scared of the big angry looking scar I barely sat in the tub let alone scrubbed it - my mw had a good laugh when I thought it was infected - no love she told me - you just need to wash it! I thought I would die of embaressment.

No one told me I would love my son so much I would stop breathing sometimes when I looked at him. And no one told me that years on I would still be crying at tv adverts :O)

And oh - my size 5 shoe collection was eventually donated....I moved to a 6 a few weeks before and never went back :O(

  • When my friend was pregnant she had to be very careful as she'd previously had a premature baby who died. From months 3-6 she was only allowed to use the stairs in her home once a day, obviously that's very restrictive. From months 6-9 she had to stay in hospital with her legs in the air! She's a bit of a high flyer so was in the hospital bed with her laptop and had a daily meeting with her PA - she was allowed to work, but only in that position! :o

Murtle - I had the anti D injection as I have rhesus negative blood. This is given to all rhesus negative mothers shortly after birth. It's also common to have one if you have a late miscarriage or still birth.

Thank you to Bargain babe, Gingham and Becles for explaining the injection thing.

I take it, it's just the one then....the way I read it, it was ongoing for 7 months....I'm rhesus negative too....so wouldn't like to be a pin cushion for 7 months.....:o

hey who am I kidding - I'm joining the American cult with a previous poster :rotfl: :rotfl:

I'm rhesus negative too and they now give you an injection at 28 weeks and after the birth. I haven't had one yet though as only 24 weeks.

I was present at the birth of my sister's second child, her son was 9lb 13 1/2 and grey/blue.

Nobody warned me what colour he would be, I got the shock of my life.Within seconds he was breathing and colouring up normally, but WOW! someone should tell you.

Sadly with my dd, she was forceps so I didn't have her laid onto my tummy.

Her third child was born in her amniotic sac, known as being born in her cawl, it is apparently a sign of great luck

I'm Rh neg and just had the injections after the births (two). With DS I did have some bleeding at around 12 weeks (and if you have any bleeding/cuts/so on you have to have one) so I had one then, which was the only one that hurt, so much so that I had to be helped back to the car as I could hardly walk. After having two sections I was used to being like a pin cushion - it's a good job I'm not scared of needles. With DD I also had a drain (someone mentioned that earlier) and ignorance was bliss when it was taken out, I thought it was just a needle, not a twelve foot length of rubber hose!!!!! I begged the surgeon when DS was born to be very careful as I didn't want that again, and bless her the first thing she did after she sewed me up was come and tell me that I hadn't had to have a drain!!! I've still got a bald patch down below where it went in!!! TMI. :rotfl:

And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

    For me it was:

    - I didn't know that the afterbirth doesn't always deliver itself afterwards, and that you can end up having to have an 'All Creatures Great and Small' experience.

    - That epidurals don't work for everyone so that you can feel the surgeon's hands inside you while he's manually removing the afterbirth. (Worse the second time, because I knew what was coming.)

    - That every medic who passed my bed would think it was OK to examine my sanitary towel without asking or drawing curtains, regardless of who was visiting me or passing my bed at the time.

    - That nurses would just grab one of my nipples to plug the baby onto without asking first.

But even those horrors and indignities were nothing compared with the overwhelming fear that I was completely responsible for my baby's welfare.
