    I wouldnt ever recommend AVG

AVIRA has the best virus definitions (So more likely to catch those nasties), but doesnt have email scanning (I use it, if I want to scan an emal attachement I simply scan it from the desktop)
AVAST is slower, with not quite as good updates but has email scanning
MSE is light (So im told) but slightly poorer updates than Avast, MSE doesnt scan emails either

Avira has a lot of components which probably weren't included in those figures, as does mse/defender which allocates stupid amounts of memory (see peak memory usage in task manager). My own Avast figures are nowhere near the ones quoted in that (outdated) article

Scan times aren't really a good indication of anything, because one AV could be doing a more thorough scan than another.

I don't plan on visiting any dodgy sites,
So you won't be going to Fakebook or using Hotmail then, :D.

Both seem to be major sources of infection judging by the posts on this forum.
You may not be planning on visiting dodgy sites, but anyone can be caught out.

    Avira or MSE.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Sorry, apologies 33 days outdated for that article
  • I used AVG - it slowed my computer down when starting up and was a pain to update and do system scans. I now use Avira and it works much quicker and better and actually manages to detect stuff without slowing the computer right down. I would be very wary of anything produced by Microsoft for virus detection.

It's far older than 33 days, and is based on old versions of AV software.

ClamAV is trusted at the gateway in many commercially sold applications/appliances - including those offered by Trend Micro - Windows version:

Strange, you no doubt use their operating system, you download their updates, but you wouldn't trust their Anti Virus.
