I'm looking to install one of the above free anti virus s/w on my netbook, but which one? Does anyone have any recomendations? I don't plan on visiting any dodgy sites, and want something that isn't going to use up all of the cpu and ram.

Thanks

Personally at the moment I favour Microsoft Security Essentials for installing free AV on people's machines so I guess "none of the above".

I'm also using Microsoft Security Essentials. I find it much better than AVG which seemed to cause my laptop to boot slower.

I would discount AVG from your list of 3.

So either Avira (AntiVir), Avast or MSE the choice is yours.

I personally use Avira.

Avast is light on resources compared to the rest.

Compared to Avira it depends.

Not much differnce but Avira still comes out tops.
Scan Timing and Virtual Memory Usage: AntiVir (scan) and AVG (VM)

Since AVG do not offer a quick scanning, I have no choice but to only compare the scan performance
of these 3 antivirus programs using a full system scan:
• Avast did the job in 36 minutes with 95MB of Virtual Memory Size (VM)
• AntiVir finished scanning in 28 minutes using 106MB of VM
• It took 42 minutes for AVG to finish the full system scan taking advantage of 57MB VM size
While the PC is idle, the VM for Avast is higher than AVG and AntiVir:
• Avast is taking 63MB camera.gif of virtual memory
• AntiVir is using 58MB camera.gif VM
• AVG is running with 35MB camera.gif VM

AVG - is useless! It will tell you your computer is inpected but won't do anything to remedy the problem.

avira did the work! So use avira. Avast and MSE are supposedly good although there are claims that MSE is a bit like spyware as data gets sent back to microsoft...

McAffee is not too great either it seems.
