Knit Your Square to Give Your Share - PART 4

Hi Suki
I should have added to my post that it doesn't matter whether or not you think you are a good knitter or crocheter. Loving Hands collect squares and scarves for their various charities, so feel free to make as many as you like. Like most knitters, though, you are probably better than you think you are! I agree that it's the ideal thing to do if you are snowbound. If you look at Maytaurus's links, there are plenty of patterns for squares, but plain ones are just as welcome. She also has links to some brilliant tutorials for both knitting and crochet.

One suggestion? Perhaps the links and description of the group should be in the first post? I really was confused yesterday. I didnt read the whole thread because it honestly felt like I was intruding on a private chat amongst friends. I was furiously scanning through for links and gave up - hence I asked
If I were to get into town today to buy some needles to make the basic square or scarf - what size would you suggest and what ply wool? Just to get a start0 -
For a basic square or scarf, I would suggest DK (double knitting) wool and size 4mm needles (old size 8). Using that wool and those needles, every five stitches you cast on is equal to about an inch, even though it won't look like it when you first cast on. For crochet, use the same wool and a size 4 hook, and do the foundation chain as long as you need.
I will edit my first post on here, and add a link to my post on this page (no 1886) to make it easier for people to find out about us. The very last thing we want to do is to put people off joining us; we really are a lovely bunch of people!

Suki1964 Lets try again and welcome.
Hope you have a really happy and rewarding time with us.
I apologise for posting twice and not welcoming you -- I literally was popping on amongst other activities because I was so sad about things that were happening. So I did not have the time to read back or look at your other posts.
Similarly to texting messages can be misconstrued -- So no attack was at all intended from this end either!
So welcome again and enjoyTry and do a good deed every day.0 -
Hi everyone.
I've been back to my very first post on here and tried to add a link to post number 1886 (on today's page - it explains what we do!), but I couldn't post the link itself, for some reason. I've edited it to point people in the direction of the post and the page number, so at least those who read the first page can find it. I will also add the same to one of my daily posts, too. That way there will be regular pointers for newbies and lurkers.
I hope you are all having a good day. The sun is actually shining here - for the first time in what seems like weeks! It's still very cold, though, and I don't think the sun will melt much of the hard frost we have on the grass.
I've had no more news from my sister about my BIL. He sees the doctor today, I think, so she will probably be in touch after that. He had a lovely afternoon yesterday with much-loved visitors, so I'm sure that gave him a huge boost.

Suki, sorry I missed you yesterday been frantic in my wee corner of France its the school fete tomorrow and I am up past my eyeballs in snowmen to be stuffed and wheat bags which are sewn but needing wheat or rice into them. So apologies for the lack of communication when you are desperate to get stuck in and started the last thing you need is to be ignored or to be trawling through pages and pages of links and stuff

that is a link to one of MAYTAURUS' pages when she was in better health and on top of things you may find something there of use, I only kept it as a bookmark because I wanted to learn crochet....the youtube video's were too fast for me tho' so I am still TRYING.
Anyway, I am rambling so will stop and go stuff some snowmen, hope to see you posting often with the progress on the squares/scarf or whatever it ends up as -

OH and I have been over the road helping out a couple of oldies out today, we have known them for 25 years or so,and they are well into their 80's now. They needed a hand sorting a few things out, cost them a chocolate biscuit and a cuppa though
 Hello and welcome to suki1964 nice to see you, we are an on-line 'Knit and Natter' group really we all live quite far apart so a weekly meet is not on. Please do keep popping in for a chat, and keep us up to date on your progress, you'll soon get the hang of it all it's a skill once learned never forgotten
jean - thanks for the link, love the house and I must have a bash at the crochet ear flap hat (another one for my ever growing list of things to do)
kathy - so sorry to hear about your BIL I hope he responds a bit more when he has seen the Doctor tomorrow.Thank goodness your sister has you to open up to,as time goes on she will need your support more and more x
I wanted to get the decks cleared before Christmas so OH was despatched to the Post Office with a huge box for Lou at L/H today with the granny blanket and the Maroon school jumper and beanie hat in, put some bits and pieces in for the granny to make up and sell, beads and plastic strings, 2 little foam handbags, I made up a sewing and knitting kit as well with fabric, needle case, knitting needles, crochet cotton and some wool, a couple of notebooks and pens, comb, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes. I filled the box up with sailors hats, preemie baby hats, a small childs jumper and the obligatory hedgehogto be sent on to the other charities.
Never realised there was so much to go, but then I have'nt sent anything for a while.
Right, I am off to the sofa with a hook and some wool, O and a box of maltesers (sorry Jean);)

In search of me - thankyou for the welcome, I apologise if i missed your post. And Roamin and pippa - many thanks
Im sorry I kind of landed in the middle of so many having such hard times. (((((Hugs))))
No needles or wool today, I went shopping in another town today - more suited for christmas shopping but left me not knowing where to get needles and wool. Theres a shop in my nearest town, i can pop in tomorrow0 -
ISOM - I am so sorry to hear such sad, shocking news. It was obviously completely unexpected for the family, and my heart goes out to them.
Pippa - how lovely that you are helping your vulnerable neighbours, especially at this time of year and in such horrid weather. That will be a lovely box for Lou to open, won't it?
Suki - it's not your fault that it's a difficult time on the thread, so please don't apologise. We support each other in good times and bad and, fortunately, the bad times are a lot rarer than the good.
Well, BIL did not have too good a day yesterday, but he had visitors in the afternoon which made him feel a bit better. He gets the results of his latest blood tests today, so hopefully the doctors can sort out some treatment to make him feel a bit more comfortable - the itching, all over his body, he is finding very hard to cope with. The stent that was put in last week should have helped, but it may need moving, so I hope something can be done for him, and soon.
Well, believe it or not, DH has actually started tiling the kitchen - we've only had the tiles since July, and I thought they were taking up root in their boxes which we've been storing in the utility room. They are going to look lovely when they're all done, and will make the kitchen look even more finished.
Well, I'm still finding it hard to get any woolly time lately; I'm just making a few pairs of wristwarmers using an easy pattern that I don't have to concentrate too much on. They are for pressies that will be light to post back to the UK, along with the jewellery that I've been making (photos to be posted once they've been opened at Christmas). I can only really make the jewellery during the day - as soon as the lamps go on in the early evening, it's harder to tell colours apart!
Anyway, I hope you all have a good day, and that the weather is kinder for you all. We had no rain at all yesterday and the sun even came out!
