Thanks, again, everyone. Your kind words and gentle hugs mean such a lot. I've just had an email from my sister. BIL was looking better in the morning yesterday, but when she called in to see him later, his blood pressure had fallen and he was looking really poorly. They had to give him a blood transfusion which made a huge difference and, by the time she left, he was looking a great deal better. The nurses reckon he'll be helping them make the beds by tomorrow! Sis said that the nurses and doctors have been wonderful, and are doing all they can for him; nothing is too much trouble. Even that will make a difference to him and and is really reassuring for my sister. BIL has placed an order for his first meal when he finally comes home - double egg, chips and peas! This is great because it means his appetite is coming back. At last, after three weeks, he can taste his food, and yesterday he ate his first proper meal and even asked for seconds (hospital food, at that!). They've also been giving him lots of Horlick's which is good for him. We are all very encouraged now and are daring to think that, because they haven't done the biopsy, there is a chance that the mass on his liver is non-cancerous. He will still have to go through the chemo just in case it isn't, but, as they say, where there's life, there's hope. I can't wait to hear that he his finally back at home.

I've had a pm on here but, when I open it up, there's nothing there! So, if anyone sent me a pm yesterday - I don't know who it's from or what it says.

Yesterday seems to have disappeared in a blur. I Skyped my boys to let them know what is happening with BIL. They and their families were all off work and school due to the snow but, according to DIL2, it was the wrong type of snow and they couldn't make a snowman because it was too fluffy! Summer was given an early Christmas pressie from DIL2's mum and dad - a sledge. They had brought it for her for Christmas, but couldn't resist giving to her early now that it is snowing!

Nearly all the plumbing has been done in the house now. There's just a bit more to do today. I have kept the workers fed and watered, and we opened a bottle of wine last night and had a relaxing evening, although I didn't get any crochet done because I felt quite weary. I did manage to wrap the Christmas pressies for DH's brother to take back home with him when he leaves tomorrow - that's if he doesn't get snowed in. It snowed last night and we have about two inches of it here, which doesn't seem too bad compared to the UK. He's going to call in to the farm before he goes home to get stocked up on sausages and lots of other goodies. He has two cool bags with him and orders from his OH and DS to fill them both up!

Well, we are managing to keep nice and warm here, with both fires up and running at full whack - a real change from last winter when the house still needed a lot of work and didn't feel much like home at all. I have lots of church candles that I light in the evenings in the kitchen and the sitting room; it makes it all look really cosy and is very comforting when it's so cold outside. We are fully stocked up with essentials whatever the weather throws at us and, if we do get snowed in for a while, we should be able to cope.

I hope you are all keeping warm and safe. Our forecast here is for milder weather from Sunday onwards, so I hope it's the same for the UK. I think we'll all be glad when this wintry spell is over.

Well, I've mioliered on quite a bit, so I'm off for another cuppa.

Have a good day, everyone, and thank you all so much for being there. I am so worried about BIL and my sister, that it really helps to be able to post about it on here.

    Hi everyone

Still freezing cold here but we've had no more snow since Thursday. The sun is well and truly out and is gradually melting the snow and ice, but it's still freezing cold.

The latest news from my sister, Jane, is that the blood transfusion BIL had on Thursday is working wonders and he's gradually turning pink again! As soon as all the jaundice has cleared, they can start the chemo. He's off all the drips, is walking around the ward, and his appetite has come back, so he can now start to fatten up ready to face the chemo. He's not out of the woods by any means, but he's is feeling a lot more positive and longing to get back home, which the doctors say will be early next week. They still want to do the biopsy but it's too difficult and dangerous at the moment, so they're not really sure what they're dealing with - we're just hoping and praying that the growth is non-malignant but, of course, they need to do the chemo to give him every chance in case it is.

DH's brother is going back home today, he's just finishing off some soldering, then he's calling in at the farm with two cool bags to get stocked up on things to take back with him. We've really enjoyed having him around and it's helped me a lot, too. Sadly, his lovely wife died of cancer eight years ago (at the age of 43 - how unfair is that?), so he knows what Jane is going through.

Your words of support and kindness this week have been wonderful for me. It's been a bleak few days, which has seemed like years, and I've shed a lot of tears for my wonderful kind BIL and my lovely dear sister. I've gone from the depths of despair to hearing a different more hopeful tone in Jane's voice, so now I am feeling hopeful, too.

I wish you all a lovely weekend, and hope that the weather starts to get better for you all.

  • Morning folks, sorry I have been missing but with electricity cuts and lovely snow it made life a wee bit of a chore for a few days. Electricity is all back on now and awoke this morning to the sound of rain on the roof windows so the snow will be going providing it keeps warmish, otherwise it will just turn into one huge skating rink! DH is still in the UK believe its Surrey today and Kent on Monday, he hasn't had great weather at all and I do think he might just say WE AIN'T DOING THAT AGAIN, will see how he feels when he gets back at the end of next week. I shall now go and read up on the three pages of forum news that I have only skimmed. Sending you all love and huge cuddles, keep warm and safe regardless of what you are doing.

Hi Chalky - what a lovely suitcase packed full of hugs! Have a great lunch!

Jean - hope your DH completes his snowbound mission successfully, and that your electricity stays on from now on!

It's warmed up here but now we have the rain - looking forward to a bit of sun at some point!

My sister (Jane - well, Veronica Jane, but because I couldn't say 'Veronica' properly when we were little, she has always been known as Jane!) reports that BIL is feeling a lot better now. He is off all the drips and cannulas, eating properly and asking for seconds and, although bits of him are still tender - to be expected according to the doctors - he is feeling a lot more positive. He will have another blood test today and, hopefully, will be able to come home soon. They are still none the wiser about what's causing the problem, but we're hoping he will be able to have a biopsy at some point. At the moment, they think it will be too dangerous to do it. The jaundice is slowing clearing up, which is great. Both he and my sister have lots of questions to ask the specialists now that they feel that they can focus a bit better. Jane says that the last few weeks have just been a blur, but that she wants as much information as she can get so that they can make the best of the time he may have left.

Well, it's Sunday, we woke up late and the day has half gone already. We're not planning on doing too much because we've been busy all week, so I'm hoping to get some woolly stuff done this afternoon. I shall just make a chicken casserole that can cook itself while I lounge around, and I need to ice some cakes, then that's me done chore-wise!

I hope the weather is clearing up wherever you all are. Here, we just have tiny patches of snow left, and the rain is dealing with those.

    Have a great day

Jean - that is absolutely fantastic; you clever thing, you! I love all the extras you've thought of, like the loo, and the fact that it's open 24/7 - it must be the only all night garage in France! I bet the lucky little boy who gets it, complete with cars, will be thrilled.
