Impassioned call to restate this forum rule. :T
I don't come to MSE often but when I do it's to give or recieve support. I'm drawn to the benefits forum because that's my day job (NOT DWP-the claimant's side) and there are some notable stalwarts giving fantastic advice and info.
However, I reel from the many misinformed and sometimes bizzare posts made in response to requests for help made by decent people in real desperation. Please, if you need to attack your own just post to the Dail Mail blog or join the Tory party. The people who post are asking about legal entitlements, they are not asking for help to fiddle the system. If you think the system is wrong speak to your MP, and whilst your at it, if you want to know why the books don't balance ask what they are doing about the billionaire tax dodgers.

Unfortunately, many people are asking for help to fiddle the system as you will know if you come here regularly.
Not sure what you mean by attacking "your own".0 -
If the OP doesn't come on MSE often, how do they know that people don't come on asking how to fiddle the system?
I have read several threads recently where people are asking exactly this. They might couch it in different terms, but they are still asking how to get as much out of the benefits systyem as possible, yet not always be honest about their circumstances because that might mean a reduction in benefits.
As a benefits claimant myself, I see the system as a safety net for those of us who genuinely need it, not as 'free money' for anybody who wants it.0 -
MSE isnt about people getting their benefit entitlements and hasnt been since I have been a member.
The majority of people are scammers.0 -

You have been a member of MSE for over three years. In that time you have posted on the Benefits board sixteen times, so approximately once every two months. If you wish to change the ethos of the board, or what you perceive the ethos of the board to be, why not actually contribute something, rather than just moaning about it?Gone ... or have I?0 -
As said above, many people come on here who ARE trying to scam the system ('Can I claim as a single parent even though I actually have a partner?' ...'Can I hide/spend/give away/not mention/hide under the mattress the £50 grand I have just inherited so that I don't have to pay my own Council Tax?' 'Can I take ownership of my old mum's house so that her Care Fees do not eat up my inheritance?'....... 'Why won't the Government pay for my debt repayments?')....you get the drift. These people usually do not like the answers they are given and so the thread often becomes nasty.
However, most people ARE genuinely asking for help and do not intend to commit Benefit Fraud and there is usually plenty of help for those people on the Benefits Board.
If the questioners are not asking how to commit fraud, Benefits Board people are usually very helpful.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
Have to agree wholeheartedly with the above posters who have responded to this thread. If the OP deals with claimants in their day job, and they come on here and browse, I'm sure that they can be a useful source of advice for many of the posters that they say are in real desperation. However, in three years, the poster has only found it worth her time to comment in 16 posts - so obviously not as many have hit the OP as being 'desperate' as others have found to be 'desperate' - or else, I cannot imagine why somebody so caring would not offer advice and assistance, and merely 'read and run'.
It usually doesn't take alot to find out a scammer on here - their stories don't add up, even when written down, they cannot remember what they have said in previous posts, and think we are so stupid that we cannot find where they have contradicted themselves totally in other threads on the forum.
I have no time for a benefit cheat, and would report one in an instant. However, as said above, benefits are about being a safety net for those in times of need - and while fortunate enough to never have had to rely on it, I do object to it being abused in a fraudulent manner, as maybe one day I or others close to me may need it - will it be around?
Those needing genuine help do get it here, those who are trying to scam - well, they get treated in a way they thoroughly deserve0 -
Thanks OP - I needed a laugh! :rotfl:0
