I thought everyone was going to stop buying cars after the scrappage scheme?

Scrappage scheme registrations for May were 4,320 down from 52,839 in March. Very much the dregs."The state is the great fiction by which everybody seeks to live at the expense of everybody else." -- Frederic Bastiat, 1848.0

The tax point would be date of delivery. Not the date of order.
I would argue that is not your average scrappage car though, they were low value and unlikely to deviate from standard specs.0 -
Kinda like LR figures, is it just taking 3 months to filter through?;)
Anecdotally I am aware of a fair few cash rich who when the scrappage scheme was announced, believed they'd do themselves a favour & save £2k. The swap schemes some retailers are offering will give some bouyancy to sales.
However, in the same vein I am not aware of anyone atm contemplating upgrading their car. Mine is 10 years old, & tbh I hope to get at least another 5 years out of it if possible (allowing for a mid life crisis of course. Then I'll buy a convertable obviously!;))It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

I would agree with you.
However at the same time I'd argue that the average car purchase under the scrappage scheme wasn't "normal" in terms of that market (as per the post I've already made on this thread).
I would also assume that fleet cars were pulled at some point last year by a number of firms.
Something is happening though, as Land Rover are looking to recruit again I believe. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
There could quite possibly be a surge in new car sales soon, as a lot of those companies who swapped over to 5 year terms, instead of the normal 3 year terms around 2008, will be reaching the end of their 5 years.
Don't know if it's just my area, but the two car supermarkets I had reasonably close, have stopped dealing with the 3 year ex fleet stuff...was always a really good buy. Now they both seem to be dealing with 6 month - 1 year cars.
Will be interesting to see if other places start to appear dealing with 5 year old ex lease stuff, as there will presumably be quite a bit around soon.0 -

They are, but living in India or China might help.;)
But yes I believe you are right, we can't deny however anyone try's to spin it figures are higher now than when the scrappage scheme was in place. (Not you LJ)0 -

No, here in the midlands they're looking to expand production in local factories.
NB I've had a scoot around my usual newsy sites & can't find the article I read. Hope I'm not imagining it...:oIt's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
