UK new car sales rose 13.5% in May compared with the same month a year ago, according to the latest industry figures.
The number of new cars sold in the UK during the month was 153,095 compared with 134,858 in May last year, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said.
The increase marked the 11th successive monthly rise.
So up again and well up on a previous scrappage assisted month (this time last year).
Looks like it did not bring to many purchases forward then (I would say a lot of this is now down to companies leasing again though.:))

that was only your frother mate with his Devonian Economic theory
but 13.5 up from nothing is nothing anyway - you know the rest of the script pmsl :rotfl:0 -
Orders had to be placed before the scrappage scheme ended. So sales are now being booked as the vehicles are being delivered.0

This time last years Production HAD STOPPED for many manufacturers.
They were clearing out stock desperately, as they had fields full.
This year, now, you may as well buy a new car, for the cost of a second hand one.
If you compare sales now to the same period in 2007 or even 2006 I think you will be horrified.Plan

Sales are pretty awful compared to the May figures throughout the noughties:
2008 -- 179,272 units
2007 -- 185,797 units
2006 -- 190,002 units
2005 -- 187,900 units
2004 -- 194,480 units
2003 -- 200,059 units
2002 -- 208,669 units
2001 -- 198,619 units
2000 -- 194,114 units

You would not get away with invoicing in may when it ended is March surely?
Sales had to be completed in March did they not?0 -
They are doing swappage schemes instead now. Some excellent deals out there at the moment, I was tempted but I'm going for 2 wheels insteadThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

During the scrappage scheme the most popular cars sold were korean. Now that the scrappage scheme has ended the average price of the new car bought has increased dramatically.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. You had to order I believe, sign the paperwork.
Then the car would be produced.
So you could have gone in on March 20th, signed the papers, get a car delivered 3 months later.
The new car, would have a June registration. Therefore, counting towards junes figures.0 -

Cars built to specification can have delivery times up to 16 weeks. So not sure how the sale could be completed in March.
The tax point would be date of delivery. Not the date of order.0 -

New cars dont take 3 months to arrive though unless they all ordered made to order cars!!!
I purchased a new car in 2003 and it took 1.5 weeks.
when has the average UK new car sale ever taken 3 months? you are thinking of the Land registry.:D0
