I'm not for or against apple and I currenly dev apps for the Ipod, but I can't help think why on earth would you want a device that is restrictive.. Ok it came from the IPhone a device what is also as restrictive but the major differance is that a Iphon is a mobile phone and these devices are naturally like this. At the same time a Ipad is not a phone.. it is a computer that runs on mobile phone technology.

Today there are huge pushs in people being open source and Free (no not flying a black flag kinda free) to encourage dev.
Looking at apples aproach is that you use there dev tools,
what they have made,
You program the way they want you to,
When you finally have a cool app you have to submit it to them (as there is no other technical way) And they have the right to say no and not give a explanation.. because its their app store and they can make the rules.
But before you get on the app store you pay £70 to be there
And 30% of gross income.
Think of this as microsofts monoply and times it by ten.

There is great advatages to jailbreaking and no side effects untill it breaks and you can not reverse the jailbreak. It is quite hard to brick a Iphone as it is a software patch and this applys to the Ipad too.

benifits of jailbreaking to me?
custom themes - be your own person and customise a bit :P
access to Free software - again no not priracy, open source kinda Free
access to administrative tools - such as the terminal SSH and the ability to use your Iphone as a web server, good for showing off websites on the go.

The ability to access a better functioning app store then the IStore.
Access to applacations that were rejected from the app store
Access to more apps with cool features. have you heard of syncing Itunes over wifi??? thats there, you have to pay for it like but you can get it.
dev applacations and easily transfer them to friends

You just buy a new model later that year, simples, if you look seriously most people only keep a phone for about 18 months to two years and they can cost similar if you don't bow down to being locked into a contract. Lets face it they are fairly cheap.

iPad, iPhone, iPod touch - essentially the same animal each having a little extra, the same prog does the same jailbreak on them all.

This is no different than any wireless unit, there are several iPad security apps that run always on with it's o/s that negate this issue and most are free, let's face it, for a lot of people it won't be an issue, if this is an issue and you have failed to install the security then you deserve it, other than that I am sure now it has been exposed there will be a sucurity update very soon, just look at windows machines they get security updates almost daily because they are so insecure so the occasional lapse on this unit is not realy that bad.
