Tell me about it. If I'm buying bread, I don't buy the really cheap stuff which is really just air and it does cost a fortune.
Go for itI really can't recommend getting a slow cooker enough. It's my current favourite 'gadget'.
Something else I've just thought of is going round car boot sales
as people buy things and then never use them, lol. It might not be for you (it's not my favourite thing to do, but lots of people recommend it - especially if money is tight)

Been toying with the idea of a bread maker for a while now but I have a couple of concerns.
1. Is it worth it?
2. How long does the bread generally take to bake?
3. Can I just bung in any flour and yeast ect or do I have to buy those packs of premixed breadmaker flour I've seen?
4. Did you find after a phase it just sits around gathering dust?
5. Does the bread keep well?
6. Does it taste nice?

Hi,
Just my personal ideas, you understand - your mileage may vary.
1 - maybe, but since we have had our Panasonic, we have only bought about 3 loaves (in just under 2 years).
2 - Anywhere from about 2 hours to 5 hours - but in my experience, the longer the better. I usually set ours overnight so that it finishes baking about 30 minutes before I get up.
3 - You need STRONG flour and quick acting yeast (ideally), I have never used a pre-mix. The quality of the bread is determined by the quality of the flour (particularly wholemeal). I use Carrs Breadmaker almost exclusively now.
4 - No - see answer to Q1.
5 - Not as well as shop bought, but you can make different size loaves. There are only two of us, and we rarely throw much away. Keeping quality is worse in the summer, in my experience.
6 - YES - see answer to Q1. I usually make 100% wholemeal, and it is fantastic (to my taste). Some specialty loaves are good too, particularly cheese and oat bread.
If you are going to give it a go, I heartily recommend the Panasonic range of BMs. Others report good results from Morphy Richards, but I have no experience of those.
Initial outlay may not be cheap, but if you take the plunge, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

I've done 2 wholemeal loaves now and a white loaf is cooking merrily.. only another 2 hours! lol
Even my oldest boy likes the wholemeal loaf and my 2 oldest daughters are devouring the latest wholemeal loaf as I type.. I swear these children are ducks in disguise!!!
I am making oat bread after this white loaf.. for hubby.
Does anyone have a foolproof recipe for a loaf using rice flour or rye flour?? Or anything gluten free??

hi everyone
just got a kenwood rapide bake off freecycle
got all the ingredients but now am stuck
it says put in the kneeding tool etc etc but i get the impression i have to take out the kneaded dough and then put it in the bread tin but it doesnt tell me to do that in the introductions is it just supposed to be obvious as otherwise you would have a kneading tool in the bum of your loaf
any help please just to get me going really excitied !!! and stuck
