Bread Maker - worth it?

Given the massive increase in the cost of bread recently, I was wondering if anyone had actually proved that a breadmaker can save you money? This wouldn't be my only motivation as I have always been tempted to get one, perhaps the new Panasonic as it's mean't to be so good. Therefore I'm not talking about the machine paying for itself as I want one anyway.
If it does work out cheaper what is best/cheapest to buy, the basic ingredients or the mixes. I'd rather buy the mixes as they make life easier! I suppose the other issue to consider is the electricity to run the thing if you bake regularly. How economical are they? They must use less energy than the oven if you were to bake by hand?
Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated.
Thanks

I only use mine to make the dough as I cook with solid fuel. I usually but the ingredients as opposed to mixes then I can add seeds, onion, cheese etc as I wish.
Mind you usually breadmixes usually work out more expensive per loaf than basic ingreadients but cheaper than buying an actual loaf.

Have a look around the old style thread - there are quite a few threads on bread making. The mixes used to be more expensive than buying a loaf but with the fact loaves of bread have shot up in price that may not be the case now.
I use mine for pizza dough - the pizza's you can buy in the shops for a £1, I have costed out cost me 50p and they are so much nicer.

Hi megan, a verynice moneysaver worked it out it costs approx one penny per hour to run a breadmaker, i use the cheapest flour, and instead of butter use veg oil, if i want seeds or nuts i buy a small bag from the asian or chinese supermarket. Rolls and pizzas are great, and ciabatta rolls are great for making toasted panninis, they work our miles cheaper, and there's a lot of satisfaction in making your own, i save over 10 pounds a week....we like bread we do!!!!!:Dpats :T0

Hi Megan,
There's a very recent thread on this so I've merged your thread with it to keep all the replies together.

Great thread as I was about to ask for BM recommendations.
BM would be more convenient for me as I have 5 1/2 month old baby so just chuck in the ingredients and leave for a bit and come back to a loaf of bread.
Yummy.Proud to be dealing with my debts

We have a breadmaker and to be honest I thought it was a gimmick. But it does way more than just make bread. We have a recipe for the most gorgeous cinnamon buns. You have the option of so many breads, which you make so you know what goes in. We often buy small packs of bread mix which you add water to. They're very nice. We've also made a pizza base, and that turned out very well.0

I have had a Panasonic SD252 for about 5 years and make a loaf a day. I've never had a single thing wrong with the machine and all my regular breadmaking friends have the same machine or a SD253 so I would definitely recommend it.Just when I'm about to make ends meet, somebody moves the ends0
