Midwife question

Your scan at 20 weeks is just a scan. You will see a sonagrapher, but not a MW.Also, at my 20 week scan, will It just be a scan or will it involve more blood tests and wee-wee tests and a discussion with midwife etc like at the 12 week scan?
And MWs are allowed holidays you know
They work hard, so deserve some time off. There should be cover though.... 0 -

I'm not complaining that she's having a holiday, just that I'm missing out on a potentially very important test because the midwifery system I am involved with is !!!!.
I've never done this before...its abit scary....0 -
I agree! There should be cover in place.0

Either call and speak to your GP or call your maternity hospital (number will be online somewhere).
If a community midwife can't fit you in, they should be able to make an appointment for you at the hospital clinic for your triple bloods (I ended up getting mine done at hospital due to lack of community midwife appointments).
The 20 week scan varies all over. Where we are you are scanned then seen afterwards by a midwife (or consultant in my case). Sometimes you are just scanned and told to go see your own midwife.
Beyond that I can't help. I wasn't under community care and only saw a community midwife at the booking in and after the birth.0 -
I am absolutely appalled at this thread! I am now just grateful that my DD and DDIL have both had their babies in other countries!
44 years ago (when England actually won the World Cup
) I was pregnant for the first time. I saw my doctor first at 9 weeks, he made an appointment for me to meet the community midwife when I was 12 weeks - and from then until 38 weeks, I saw both GP and midwife every 4 weeks - having BP & urine checks at every appointment. After 28 weeks until 36 weeks, I saw GP every 2 weeks & midwife every 2 weeks - and at 36 weeks, it was every week. I was due to have home birth - and by then knew all three of the midwives that could deliver my baby. As it was, last appointment - when I had actually started labour - my BP was high, with protein in urine and so was whisked into hospital & finished up having a forceps delivery same evening, due to impending toxemia
. However was home 3 days later and the same midwives called in twice a day for 10 days & doctor visited on days 4 & 6.
I experienced exactly the same treatment in 1969, 1972 and 1976 - and 1976 I was also offered scan - and had babies 2, 3 & 4 all at home with midwives I'd been able to form a bond with and who instilled such confidence!
Wbat price progress?

Well I am glad I went, as BP slightly raised compared to last time, so they will be "keeping an eye"
Thanks you all for your help xxxxxxxx0 -
I would ring the midwife direct they arent located at the gp surgery just have sessions there once a week. Most mw will squeeze you in at health centre or visit you at home to carry out the appointmentWins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.0

Am I the only person that can only contact my MW via GP? I have no other contact details for her?!0 -
I see my midwife at GP surgery as she does a clinic on a Wed.
However the community midwifery team are based at the huge health centre and can be contacted there if I need anything, plus my lovely midwife gave me her mobile number too.
Anything outside of midwife hours or emergency I ring the hospital Day Obstetric Unit or after 9pm it's labour ward.
As for my appointments....this is 2nd pregnancy and nobody could give a damn!!:rotfl:
With DD I was shared care between GP and hospital as surgery had no midwife attached. GP saw me every 4 weeks then every 2 weeks and the last few weeks it was a weekly check up. Plus all the hospital appointments, ante natal classes and hospital visits (to see ward, see BF nurse etc etc)
This time I went to GP, had booking in at hosp at 10 weeks, saw midwife at 17weeks, 20 week scan (and bloods and midwife chat at hospital), midwife at 26 weeks, 30 weeks, 34 weeks and 37 weeks.
Hospital at 35 weeks for discussion about birthing options and since I've chosen a CSection I had a pre surgical assessment yesterday for admission and CS on Monday! (woohoo only 3 and a bit days to go!!)0
