    Wow the butter is FAB!!!
Thankyou so much to you all for suggesting i make it, I would never have done so otherwise!!!
I chucked it in the food processor on the fastest setting and within 5 mins i had butter and enough buttermilk to make my pancakes,,I am shocked at the amount of butter I got.
I added a pinch of salt and it tasted lovely, hubby will defo eat it,,I dont eat butter on bread etc but he does,,I do use it for baking though.
I am absolutely thrilled at how easy and satisfying it is,cheers all.
glad you're pleased with it :)

first time I did it I picked up a couple of 1 pint cartons heavily reduced, like you I used the food processor & couldn't believe the amount of butter I got out of it!

I have a pair of vintage wooden butter patters (is that what they're called?) I got years ago in a charity shop, so they got their first outing when I was washing & shaping it, great fun :D

if you can't use the buttermilk straight away or face drinking it, it freezes well till you're ready to use it :)

Do you have to use double cream for butter or will single cream work but give you less butter?

I've also heard that buttermilk is great to feed to chickens!

    hi Kevin,
afaik, single cream won't work at all because the fat content isn't high enough ... but I'm open to correction from those more knowledgeable :)

don't know about the chickens, but well-chilled home-made buttermilk's a lovely refreshing drink for humans ;)
  • Swan, I am so jealous I was thinking of those paddle type butter thingys when i had my hands on the butter!!
If I see reduced cream I would defo make it again. Good to know the buttermilk freezes but I will use it up later as my daughter hates breakfast cereal so I make her pancakes,,the scotch ones are our favourite and they can be reheated in the microwave easily in the morning.
You should have seen me at the school picking the kids up,,lol i was telling everyone i just made butter hahaha :-)

those butter patters (?) lay about for years looking decorative till recently :o but i did the initial washing by hand

I've always wanted to make butter, I have early childhood memories of travelling in the postie's van to visit a 'neighbour' (miles away) of my country-dwelling grandparents, & on the way we always stopped for a cup of tea at a farm, & we were taken in through the scullery & there was often a big porcelaine sink full of freshly churned butter

now you can make butter :T you need to find a bread making school mum & team up for school fetes & the like ... when my kids were small & we lived in a farmhouse, I made wholemeal bread in my Rayburn & my neighbour who had a couple of dairy cows made butter, & they were always the two fastest sellers :D

or do both yourself & be a superstar :A
  • Swan my attempts at bread are never too great,,always turn out like bricks! Even when i tap the bottom and it sounds right it usually is a bit heavy.
School fetes and fundraisers no longer allow us to take in homemade cakes etc,,health and safety apparently,,what a load of rubbish!! Our head says they need to be able to trace the food if any problems so we have to provide food in sealed packets!! It makes me mad,,I used to make loads of biscuits and cakes.

As a child i lived in Scotland and we knew a farming family who made butter and allowed me to pat butter, I thought it was fab using the big wooden pattys.
We also spent time chasing their chickens and my mother used to wake us up in the middle of the night to go watch lambs being born,,prob was 10 or 11pm but felt like middle of nite!!
Ha nice memories from a pot of double cream !!!

AAAAAAARRRGHHH I'm so glad my kids are grown-up, I don't think I could cope with all this health & safety PC cr*p

the people we rented our house from were primarily sheep farmers so my kids have memories similar yours :)

once during the sheep-shearing, my eldest son disappeared, he was found hours later sound asleep under the ever-growing pile of fleeces :D

yes, all this good stuff from an out-of-date pot of cream ;)

You can whip some up and freeze in portions. Or make homemade icecream, or custard can be frozen for future use.

Home made butter? Put some in a jam jar and get the kids to shake it for about 1 hour. Yummy
