My favourite cake as a child was a sponge (fatless-just eggs sugar and flour) which was sandwiched with sweetened cream, and strawberry jam. We never had fresh strawberries on top, just sieved icing sugar, but I just LOVED that cake! Hmm must take my old kenwood (granny's-proper heirloom lol) to the kenwood doctors to get fixed so I can make that...

I was going to suggest Apple tart - not crumble, a proper tart!?! LIke me gran used to make

This is exactly what I was going to suggest!

Alternatively what about parkin or gingerbread? I imagine either of those would go nicely with cream.
  • Delias chocolate bread and butter pudding uses cream in the recipe...mmmmm

I would do as you suggested and check it before you throw it out, if in any doubt bin it. However if it is okay you could have it in coffee and with desserts or you could whip it up and make Eton mess which is delicious and would be perfect for this weather!

Open it and smell it. If it is unopened it's unlikely to have gone off by now - to be honest, even if it was open it's unlikely. As is often said on here, things don't turn from edible to inedible on the stroke of midnight (and sometimes they go off while in date).

You can always cook with it and freeze the results. Or whip it and freeze it to use at a later date.
  • I shall open it in the morning and if its fine i will whip it up and freeze it for later use,,,great idea many thanks all :-)

I honestly don't believe it will be "off"

I've used cream way beyond its "use by" date that's been absolutely fine, and that's cream that has been opened.
