I agree with the OP, total reliability is a must for me so I prefer to buy fairly new and hang on to it for three to four years then at least you know how it's been treated. Currently looking to buy a nearly new (59) Toyota Auris Diesel, reckon it will save me over £3000 over three years on fuel and road tax ( I am downsizing from a 1.8 Verso), not to mention a low interest deal which will reduce my payments by £100 a month.

That's wrong though, most new cars develop faults, and most of them within the 1st year of ownership. The new car driver does a favour to us that buy at say a year old as they have had the hassle of multi trips to the dealer and being lent a crate, keep it up chaps :T:T:T
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

I don't see it as wasting £1000s. Yes i'm paying out money every month but I see it as having a brand new or almost new car parked on my drive that i never having to worrying about forking out for should anything go wrong with it, plus i can change it every 2-3 years

The highlighted bit is fair comment, when I became a "liitle better off", I started buying cars at a year old.

Last one I kept 8 years. this one 4 so far.

You get rid of them because you are bored with driving them, things have rapidly been superceeded etc, not because of expence or unreliablility.

    All needs considering.

Passing cars down the family is the most cost effective for all concerned. ;)

I'd pay far more for a car that had 12 months MOT on it, rather than zero. Is there some obvious problem that you think will make it fail the MOT?

If you're trading in, probably not a great deal of difference on the trade in cost, but if selling privately, big difference.

PS a 10 plate insignia was on the hard shoulder of the M56 this morning - driver looking a bit worried standing next to it - so new cars do break down as well

No theres nothing wrong with it, not that i'm an expert but theres no obvious reason why it should fail
I just don't keep em this long!

It won't be getting sold privately either
I just take it back to the dealer, and start again with a new one
Owing no money, just a clean slate iyswim

I'm aware new cars break down. I might be a woman but i'm not completely thick :D. Like i've said before i just don't need to extra expense SHOULD anything go wrong

I'd rather break down in a 10 plate Insignia than a 56 plate fiesta!

I've got a 57 plate Ford Fiesta Zetec

Anyway i do a fair amount of miles each week and the fiesta is costing me an absolute fortune in petrol so my next car has to be cheaper to run

Surely a Zetec Fiesta is pretty efficient? Do you have a particularly erratic driving style?

I could probably do with driving a bit more economically sometimes but thats definitely not the whole cause of it

A few years ago i had a C2, with the same size engine as the fiesta
If anything my driving was worse when i was 18 than it is now (now that its bad of course :D) but even then the C2 was so much cheaper to run
Obviously petrol was cheaper then i get that but i was doing so many more miles in the C2, plus stupid little run arounds as you do when you're a teenager with a sparkly new car

Anway i just want a car thats going to cost me less to run each week
I'm a student! I need to save some of my pennies!

Please don't say by keeping the car i've got........:D

Well you ain't saving the pennies by buying new and then replacing every two years.

Hmmm you have already made up your mind on economics, hence/ie, why the post??

Save money or don't should have been the question
