    It varies for me...

My mobile is O2 PAYG on the 'Favourite Places' package so when I top up £10 I get free calls to other O2 mobiles and landlines for a month but I don't remember how many minutes but I always run out of month before I run out of minutes!
But I put my place of work as the postcode as it is more central. The radius of area where I can be in my town is so big that I still get free calls from home for that month.
When the month runs out I then start using my mobile just for texts and calls while I'm out. I then start using my landline BUT ONLY via 1899.com which we use for all calls from our landline including family in USA & Canada. Usually no call charges on the Virgin phone bill.

  • We have a basic PAYGO mobile phone for emergencies when out or on holiday. Make use of the landline evening and weekend package as much as possible.

  • Although I make most of my calls by landline, they are capped at about 6p a call as I use an indirect carrier. As I don't make too many calls this is fine for me. I have a PAYG mobile with Asda (8ppm and 4p texts). My usage means that most months, a contract would be wasted on me. My main cost with phones is having a landline to receive calls and/or to redirect to my mobile. This is because I'm self-employed and work out and about. It doesn't come cheap but the extra business I've gained like this makes it cost effective.

I have all inclusive phone calls for £5 a month. If I need to phone a 0870/0844 number, I just find an alternative on saynoto0870

A phone company recently tried to persuade my Dad to have a mobile only and said he could make huge savings by not paying for a land line.

He was on the verge of doing it until I pointed out that his mostly elderly friends would not call him on a mobile number due to the high cost from a land line.

That is a valid point. I rarely return calls to mobile numbers. I'm not that elderly... just tight!

I voted 'H' but in reality it is probably less than 1% mobile, never mind 10%. I have a PAYG mobile phone, but the battery is usually flat. I think I top it up with about £10 a year, if that.
  • Had a mobile in late 90s, only used it then when I was out, even then as little as possible.
Went PAYG in early noughties when contracts weren't value for money unless you depended upon them
Cashback redemption came into trend mid noughties and go back into contracts, where over the years, I've paid very little for my contracts thanks to cashback comissions and cashback via redemption.

I'm on Orange Racoon with 400mins&unlimited-landline/400sms/500mb data on e2save deal, after selling the SE mobile and cashback comission and cashback redemption, less than £15 for 18months of service, bought a O2 HTC Desire for £285, sorted.
Add providers like localphone for very cheap international calls to a (free for me) landline which is on credit i topup.
Add on top of that https://www.saynoto0870.com which I have bookmarked.

    I equal:
Landline = 0.01% (0800 numbers when home, the very very very rare super important call)
Mobile = 99.9% of the time (including localphone use)

That has been my usage for years now.
All the meantime I have paid BT Line Rental, which includes a voice service I don't need or want, only using it for broadband, so years later still waiting for BT to provide a "naked-xdsl" option, which should be available, but alas it seems never will despite not wanting a POTS/PSTN service.
