dress codes

we have received several invites with dress codes from the same person?
The latest one being a summer garden birthday party and being told on the invite to dress in shirt and tie etc also specifying the colour and ladies to look glamorous whatever that means?
Surely all you might want to wear on a summer evening is maybe a nice pair of shorts and a shirt or whatever? Feels highly unecessary do you think its showing off and is it right to tell people what they must wear.
personally if i was having a do outside i would like people to be free to dress as they felt. Do you really want a tie on in the summer?

Depends on what kind of 'do' it is. If its a BBQ or the likes i would be asking why could i not wear what i felt comfy in, if its a formal do then stipulating a dress code isnt unreasonable. Personally, i would never tell soemone what they could/couldnt wear0

It's their party, their choice.
You don't have to go.
Maybe they are the sort of people who organise a party to get a chance of wearing nice clothes. Maybe they are looking for bringing a bit of life to the old parties and are looking for a bit of fun with the clothes.
I looove dress up parties like this. Hate halloween parties. But I do realise that if I want no dress up halloween party I have to organise it myself. I have a costume just bought of the internet for few quid for such a parties (as there is one every year) just so I look the part without an effort and can still have a fun of going to the party.0 -
Umm, you know what this could also be - an invitation to a surprise wedding, as some couples have them themed?
Just an idea0 -

to be honest, if I was having a party and spending money on this and that and making an effort to ensure my guests had enough food and drink I would appreciate them making an effort to look nice rather than turning up in a pair of shorts and sandles.0

I would always rather be told.
I have made so many mistakes with this it is unreal!0 -
I would be annoyed. You want to be able to go and wear something you feel comfortable in.
My Dh wears a shirt & tie for work, so hes used to it but I imagine if you dont wear them its not comfy.
I wouldnt go.0 -
