I am of course assuming you can provide evidence that in the period 1979-1997 no heads of govt depts or nationalised industries earned more than the PM?.

Does the PM not also receive his MP salary in addition to the PM salary? This would add another £65k to his salary, would it not?

According to Wikipedia he does: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_Minister_of_the_United_Kingdom

Why is it Labour party legacy, weren't they paid more than the PM when Tory's were last in power as well? having said that multi-millionaire Blair has not done so badly from his paupers wage icon7.gif

i'm not sure why this is an issue - left wing or even right wing politics have nothing to do with it.

These are all very secure jobs that also come with huge pension benefits. No senior management jobs in the private sector has that kind of job security.

There was a time when lower salaries were awarded to civil servants in recognition of that job security.

This is tax-payer money and the Govt should be more careful with our money. That is not now nor will it ever be pathetic.

The country has a huge debt which is still growing. We are currently stealing from future generations - now that is pathetic.

The rewards for PMs start once they leave office. They can earn millions through book deals, consultancies and speaking engagements. I can't say I blame Blair for jumping on the bandwagon - I'd have done the same.

Given the level of responsibility involved, a PM should be on around £1M a year.

Why is it Labour party legacy,

Not only is the current wage bill a problem but the future pension bill for Govt employees is an even greater problem made worse by people living longer.

That pension bill is going to be a huge drag on the taxpayer for decades and there is nothing future Governments can do about those contracts.

so you're unable to tell us what the market rate for these types of jobs in the private sector is or if they are paid more or less than the private sector for the same role.

instead you're still ranting and trying to justify your rant using a newspaper article by saying that it is exclusively a left wing generic issue. very good, pat yourself on the back for first class analysis.

You may well have done the same, but then you should not have been Prime Minister with that attitude. The Prime Minister is supposed to be selected as someone who has integrity and the ability to do the job. The salary should not be a factor. After all they hardly need their salary while in office. Virtually everything they do is already paid for.

I think you need to put a bit more meat on that, what pension bill are you talking about?

How is this labours legacy? The pm and ministers have been poorly paid compared to many other professions for decades.
The article in question does not implicate labour or say anything about left wing politics.
Sorry but the assertion of this being labours legacy is nonsense.
