I don't really understand why people get excited about saving coins. I used to do it myself but gave up - you look like Ebenezer Scrooge counting the coins out, and it makes your hands stink!

By taking all the coins out of your pocket at the end of the day to put in a jar, just means you will need to go to the cash machine quicker to take notes out. So instead of the money sitting in the bank earning interest, it sits in a jar earning dust.

    I love the smell!

    I am crazy though.

Sod the smell, a bit of old school frugalism, instead of wet dream Gordon Gekkoism is a good starting point for anybody.

And there are some who claim I am bonkers!!!

I put 1p's, 2p's and 5p's in a big plastic screw top cylinder I got a T-shirt in from Uni-Qlo. I recently bagged up a tenner and exchanged it for a note at the bank - a year or so ago it was 13 quid. I was so reluctant to spend the tenner compared to one you just get out of the cashpoint and hand over willy-nilly!

Maybe I'll start putting 10p's in there after reading this post, but I don't mind keeping 20p's in my pocket and spending them :)

I counted mine the other day and there was £36 in there - super!!!. I have a weekly budget (which isn't very much at all) and what I do not spend I put in my cardboard box - there will be £3 going in later today (as long as I don't spend it today). We are off to France in December for the weekend and I am putting this towards our Eurostar tickets!!!

Me too!!!! And I love having a huge pile of coins that came from a savings tin.

I love it so much that I even blogged about it. If you don't want to take a massive pile of coins to the bank, here's some other places you can spend them (helps if you live in London):
Tesco self checkout, oyster top up machines, vending machines, etc.

Here's my blog entry, complete with photos :D

You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.

I put all my change in my old Alliance BS piggy bank and bag it up when the 'pig' is heavy.
Not carrying change around has lengthened the life of my trouser pockets as well - so a double saving.
For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.

alternatively, do what i do, use the debit card for everything - no loose change & maximum interest gained.

make sure you have a current account with a buffer and instant access savings do you can maintain the debit card around the £1 mark and top up after spending.
