After a visit to my parents in early April where I saw them doing this I decided to do the same. My parents save all their change and it is enough to do birthdays and Christmas every year (they have 14 grandchildren and are very generous with them)
I save everything except £1 coins and pay it into a bank account I have not used for a long time. Already I have in excess of £110, I'm hoping to have enough to cover Christmas too. As I have my first Granddaughter due in 8 weeks this will be extremely helpful. If you tell the truth you don't have to remember anything. - Mark TwainNappies and government ministers need to be changed frequently and for the same reason0 -
I pop my coins into an old cardboard box that used to contain tea bags - am going to open mine the first week of December but I think I must have about £20 in there at the moment - it all helps ....

As this isn't really an Old Style topic, I'll move it to the savings board
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. Usually if a shopping costs, say, £8.13, I'd pay something like £10.13, to spend the coins.
I'm in favour of this scheme rather than boxes, tins, jars.
It keeps the coins in circulation.
Makes change-giving easier for the cashier.
Means you don't get money out of the bank which in reality is heading straight (one shop removed) for the non-interest-paying box, tin or jar.0 -
I have a tin money box that I got free from M&S's when they had a day of giving out freebies to celebrate 125 years of trading, until then I used an old coffee jar.its great as its got a little key and padlock on it.
I not only put my 'shrapnel' in I also bung in any money I find in the street its quite suprising how much gets dropped in 1p,2p & 5ps and folk don't pick it up.I do and into the tin it goes I have £25 83 in there at the moment as I just counted it up this morning It goes towards my DGC's ice creams in the summer holidays.0 -
I don't really understand why people get excited about saving coins. I used to do it myself but gave up - you look like Ebenezer Scrooge counting the coins out, and it makes your hands stink!
By taking all the coins out of your pocket at the end of the day to put in a jar, just means you will need to go to the cash machine quicker to take notes out. So instead of the money sitting in the bank earning interest, it sits in a jar earning dust.0 -
would a bank accept paying in of large amounts of coppers? This is a nice idea0

A 'proper bank' would
A pretend bank (eg ex Building Society) wouldn't.0 -
Normally for nights out ect I take notes with me and come home with lots of coins.
Then I put all my coins in my work bag, and when I purchase my sandwiches for the day at work, I go to the tesco Self service machines and fill it up with my odd coins:D Lots of 1p and 5p goes inHowever I wouldn't give a normal checkout person that sorta change or I'm sure they would get rather annoyed
"No likey no need to hit thanks button!":pHowever its always nice to be thanked if you feel mine and other people's posts here offer great advice:D So hit the button if you likey:rotfl:0 -
Hi
You're right, they do add up. I banked £12.00 of 1p and 2p coins at the Post Office about a month ago.
Also, had about £4.00 in 20p, 10p and 5p coins to buy newspapers and some chocolate.
