Definitely, definitely psychological. I've lost (thinks re kg conversion).... 18kg and I still do double takes when i see my reflection in a shop window or something. In my head I'm still 'fat and happy' and it's taking a long time to think differently about myself and how others see me.

Good luck with the rest of it!

Ooh, what OU course are you doing? I'm about to start again in november, social science research methods. On that note, I think I should add to my list not to leave my assignments until the last minute. Eek :)

I'm doing the Intro to Social Science at the mo, moving onto psychology in October - aiming for a BSc Psych....must be mad! :)

(Just catching up with thread, will be back again in a min :D)

Part of my problem with my weight stems from the medical profession, I was put on steroids and piled on 13 stone in a year , I was then told that I was overweight because I over ate and to cut down, so I did, still piling on weight so was told to cut down (and I did), still not losing so told to cut down (and .. well you get the way this is going!), Dr Dragon (hubbie) got worried when I was eating less that 500 kcals per day and went with me to the docs (oh in the meantime they had put me on Xenical and prior to that Reductil and THAT didn't work - the Xenical just fexked over my internal workings!), at the appointment I was told I was under-eating

Even now though if I get stressed about anything (weight and health normally) I stop eating  - before the steroids I weighed in at 8 stone 9 pounds (technically underweight by about a stone :o) - I now weigh 23 stone 4 pounds and I am fed up to the back teeth with it!

hi all .. well i am night shift but have been thinking about this challenge ... i notice alot of us have a few things we want to improve on take control of etc ... quick question .. what is the most important to you individually and would sorting that one thing out have a knock on effect on all the others?

Mmm, well for me I think if I could prioritise things and learn some organisational skills then everything else would not seem quite so insurmountable....I think what you say about taking control - thats definitely what I need to do instead of sitting around waiting for something to happen.....

(Still catching up, won't be long :p)

I do exactly the same Dragon - stress for me = no food but copious (sp?) amounts of alcohol :o. I'm about 2 stones over weight but I've put that on over a 6 month period so I'm very aware that I need to knock it on the head NOW otherwise...... :S

Are you still having to take the steriods? Were they identified as contributing to the gain?

EDIT: Forgot to add that I'm coeliac so completely agree with what you said about cutting out wheaty/gluteny (aka yummy) food Kraft :)!

Ah yes - I am quite fond of the occasional cider or red wine :o, but I try not to go overboard as my sister died of alcoholism :(, we were both adopted and they think hers was hereditary alcoholism but still!

Only have to take the steroids occasionally now (but any other medication with weight gain as a side effect - well yeppers I get all the side effects and none of the benefits!) - and the steroids were pin pointed as the reason for the huge jump in weight (for a long while I had those really round cheeks you get with steroid use)

I am anaphylactic to peanuts and tree nuts (and you would be amazed how many items in Mr T's "cannot guarantee nut free"), I guess I could cut out wheat/gluten if I had to but that would mean a very restricted diet (even more so than now!)

The gluten free diet seems to work very much like Atkins for me, but I'm a bit of a carnivore so it suits me down to the ground but probably not the best for a veggie (although a veggie diet is one of the things recommended to me when I was diagnosed coeliac, I just can't imagine life with no meat :rotfl:)! Its scary really what is in our food when you read the label - not to mention frustrating when they "cannot guarantee" something  you have my sympathy Dragon!

I'm so sorry about your sister :( thats hugely sad, hereditory or not...

Hello Dragon... I would like to start this challenge please... mainly to stop WASTING money. The amount i spend on groceries each week would make your hair curl and most of it gets chucked out. I seem to fail miserably at meal planning and shopping lists usualy get left on the kitchen table as i rush out of the house!.
I am really in need of a very hefty kick up the backside in this department!. :o

So many prorities, I really don't know where to start !

As GeeBee has just said I am terrible with wasting money, despite menu planning efforts and shopping lists I really need to get a grip. This is a recurring theme in my life, lurching from one payday to the next in a completely disorganised mess.

Sugar addiction, yep, nicotene addiction, yep, too much alcohol, again - yep.
Throw in self confidence issues, debts, low paid job and it paints a pretty dismal image.

But despite all this, every morning I get up and think, right todays's a new day and recall the line in my signature.

I know I can do it, just need some oooomph.
    So bring it on.
    DC.
