i have just returned from France and unfortunately both me and my daughter had to visit the GP whilst there. We both showed our EHIC cards but it was explained we had to make a payment and then claim it back.

We both payed Euros 50 and then paid for prescriptions as well.

I have now been looking up if we can claim any of this back and see that in france you have to pay the same charge as a French citizen....

"Does an EHIC make treatment free?

No. You get treated the same way as a citizen of that country. If they get free medical treatment then you do too – if they pay, you pay the same rates. As this is a reciprocal agreement across Europe, it also means EU citizens can use the NHS in the same way."

so do i presume that French citizens pay 50 euros per consultation? how do i find out if this is true? It was a state doctors surgery not a private one. I have looked at our travel insurance and the excess is £150 pounds so we would not be covered.

I have just returned from Italy. I needed hospital treatment for a minor illness but was unexpectedly kept in hospital overnight for a few more tests / scans. I had shown my EHIC card but began to get concerned that I would be charged for extras. I had only expected an alternative antibiotic. I wasn't charged a penny (except for about 3 euros for a prescription).

I've just started to fill in the application form for EHIC card. This is a first and they want both mine and my husband's details. Does this mean we will get 1 card with 2 sets of details or 2 separate cards? Or do we both need to fill in our own application? Many thanks.

Each person should have their own card.
    Have you 'registered'?
Are you sure you're using the official website?
Will be renewing ours later this week.

Thanks Pollycat I've downloaded the forms to fill in and will post them. OH is a pain when doing such things so I have to fill everything in and then get him to sign it otherwise it will end up as a last minute rush. I'm not up to nagging him to register on line!
  • General note: Don't worry if you've gone on holiday and realised your EHIC is out of date...

"If you travel to Europe without your EHIC but then need medical treatment during your visit, you can be issued with a Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC) to prove your entitlement to the EHIC.
You will need to apply for a PRC by calling the Overseas Healthcare Team on +44 (0)191 218 1999, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. It's a good idea to save this number in your phone. Someone else can also do this on your behalf.
The PRC will give you the same cover as an EHIC until you return home. If you need to request a PRC outside of the opening hours, you should call the Overseas Healthcare Team to request the PRC as soon as possible for the next working day. You will need to provide your name, address and date of birth.
The PRC can be faxed or emailed to the establishment where you are receiving treatment."

I would suggest people check their expired dates on their EHIC because if there is a Brexit vote I wonder if any more will be issued?
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

Hi, I will unfortunately need some stitches removing from my leg when we are in Alcudia, Majorca, shortly. Can anyone please advise if this is covered by the EHIC card or will I have to pay (just wondering how much extra cash to take for this)?
    Thanks, Trish
  • Hi, I found my EHIC card had an expired date of Sept 2015 so went on the internet to obtain a new one/renew the card. I went on to the website to renew my card and submitted my application and was charged £35. At this point I just thought that was the cost for this card. However, 30 mins later after obtaining the relevant information to request a card for a family member, I went back on the search site again and noticed a site to get the FREE EHIC card. Looking on to this site I realised the card was actually free and didn't need to pay for it. I straight away e-mailed the original site to cancel my application and asked for £35 to be refunded which they have declined to do as they say they are an advisory service and my application has been submitted. Is there an way I can get my money back from them? Thank you.

I thought all these 'copycat' websites had gone.
