Shall I get a Desire?

even though I agree with everything you said I would add a little extra about the Hero saga, the problem there seems to be more of a hardware deficiency in running 2.1 than a general lack of motivation on the part of HTC. It seems the Hero just isnt powerful enough for 2.1 to run without any problems.
I remember trying a leaked 2.1 rom when I still had my Hero and it was sloooow, live wallpapers almost caused the phone to stop altogether. The Hero was designed for 1.5 and works very well with it, perhaps a stripped down 2.1 "lite" would be better for the Hero.
I think anyone considering Android should go for the Desire, it's pretty future proof hardware wise, and is better than it's nearest competitor, the Nexus 1, the touch buttons on the Nexus are a poorer implementation of the hard buttons on the Desire.====0 -
A slightly less technical question. I've decided to get a Desire but I'm now wondering what network to go for? My biggest concern is the unlimited internet limits that the networks have slapped on.
Orange have the 500mb limit.
3 have a 500mb limit but I like the skype to skype feature.
t-mobile is 1gb limit
Is anyone currently using the Desire and what kind of internet usage are they using?0 -

I have 1gb internet from three but they decreased the limit to 500mb for new contracts / upgrades later.
T-mobile gives 3gb for android handsets directly or via some resellers but via other resellers you seem to get 1gb only.
It is very easy to cross the limit on these phones depending on how you setup or use the phone.
Networks charge or throttle connection if limit is crossed. With three you can buy additional 2gb bundle for 5pounds. But that would still be lower than T-Mobile limit of 3gb. Orange throttle connection after 750mb, my friend had his iPhone 3gs throttle last month after crossing 750mb limit in first month of contract with orange last month. Vodafone new charging policy is ludicrous, after 500mb they charge 5pounds for every 500mb. So to get 3gb limit like T-Mobile you would spend an extra 25pounds a month just on additional internet charges above your monthly contract!!!!!
While you can buy additional 2gb for 5pounds (after initial 500mb new limit on three) and get 2.5gb limit for 5pounds extra on three mobile contracts.
I don't know about other networks pricing and hope others inform on this thread.bubblesmoney :hello:0 -
HTC Desire on Orange here
Panther 30
400 mins talktime
unlimited texts (fair usage policy of 3000 per month)
50 mms included
unlimited internet (FUP of 1Gb)
£30 per month
I have my Desire set to hook up to the router when at home, so it doesn't eat into my internet, but since the account went live on 15th May, I have only used 16mb anyway on the 3G (that included being on the 3G all the way from Lancashire to Somerset and back, while using internet in the car and constant downloading of emails)0 -
Is the hero getting the update then a smy mate seems to think he will be able to get the update for his hero0

T-Mobile give 3GB on the Desire (and other Android models), and it isn't a cap like Vodafone, if you go over the 3GB there is no extra cost incurred.
I doubt it is possible with normal use, even some streaming, to consistently use 3GB per month.====0 -

HTC are still saying that the Hero will get 2.1, it seems that they are still trying to get around the hardware limitations of the Hero.
I think there is absolutely no chance of the Hero ever getting Froyo 2.2 though.====0 -

ah i see, whereas the desire would get 2.2 froyo as its more powerful right0 -
The US version of the Hero has recently had 2.1 release dfor it. Hpefully the European vresion will get it soon. One of the problems is that going from 1.5 to 2.1 is a major version upgrade. 2.1 to 2.2 is just a minor release andin theory should be easier to do.
As to which network, I'm with T mobile and have been very happy with the service so far. I bought mine via mobiles.co.uk and wsa originally restricted to 1GB FUP. I contaced support via Twitter and they immediately put me on the correct 3GB FUP. The main issue for me with the 1GB FUP is that on that they restrict your 3G download speed to 350KB/S, now I'm on the 3GB FUP I can get 2000KB/S.It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -

this adds proof to the hardware being the problem, the US Sprint Hero and the GSM Hero do not share the same hardware platform, the only thing they have in common is the name.
US Hero looks like this:
