Can you or your daughter knock on the neighbours door tonight and ask her? if she say's that the cat was put down on the vet's advice then you know she's lying, if she say's that it was put down on your mums request then it's your mum that's lying.

If it turns out to be the neighbour that had the cat put down then i would be reporting them and the vet in question to the rspca.

ive now found out the reason, after talking to my sister and telling her the facts she asked my mother straight out if there was there was more to it than she was saying and she broke down and she admitted there was, apparently there is a pedigree cat living a few doors away from my mum and snowy attacked it severing a main artery, the cat is now in a very bad way, the owners are leaning on my mum for the money to cover the vets bill, my mum has said she will pay for the cat but she has no money other than her pension as she had to give up work after suffering from anal cancer so how she's going to do that l dont know, apparently she didnt want to worry us and thats why she made up the story about Snowy having heart trouble

Well if shes into making up stories how do you know that she is telling the truth now?
Maybe she did just get sick of the cat and had it put down?

So your mum had her cat put down because it attacked another. :(

As for the neighbours - if it really is a pedigree cat, they should have been responsible enough to have insurance for it. In fact, most pedigree cats are either indoor cats or are kept in a secured garden. If it were me, I wouldn't be paying. Cats are cats; they fight.

    Poor Snowy :(

That is awful - she could have had Snowy rehomed. It was a cat fight, what are the going to do put a GBH charge on a cat. It takes 2 to fight. If it is a pedigree it should be insured, scrap that it should be insured anyway.

under the law cats are deemed to be independent animals and owners of cats (unlike other animals such as dogs and horses) are NOT liable for damages or costs for any damage or loss caused by their pet.
Sounds like your mum panicked hun after recieving some nasty threats. while i dont agree with what she did it does sound as if she thought she was making the right decision financially (bit confused thinking here as if she WAS liable the fact the cat had been put down wouldnt make a difference). Is she well? your mum I mean, this wasnt really a rational act was it? i hope it was just panic on your mums part.

I was hoping that this thread would turn out to be some kind of joke. I just cant believe that anyone would arrange to have their own perfectly healthy pet (and member of the family) killed because they got in a fight with another cat. If your mum knew that you and your daughter loved the cat so much why wouldn't she try to rehome it with you or with one of the wonderful protection agencies. How hard would it have been to put the cat in the car and drive it to one of the rehoming centres? I don't buy the part about the other cat being pedigree blah blah blah, I have never known a pedigree cat owner to allow the cat to be outdoors. This is just horrible, if its a real!

Oh this thread has made me angry! I don't know what is worse:a healthy cat pts because it got into a fight with another cat (doesn't matter whether it was a pedigree or not, cats will be cats), the vet who put down the healthy without -it seems- asking too many questions, or the owners of the (supposedly uninsured) pedigree cat who are putting pressure and possibly frightening an old lady to get money out of her!

    Absolutely disgusting!

    Totally agree with you.

For those who know me, they will know I don't like cats, but this situation is so sad :(

I still don't know why the Mum would have the cat put to sleep? For what reason?

Tell the neighbours to go and swivel, they should have insurance for their cat.

And the vet is bang out of order, infact the practice is, for giving the info out over the phone!

I'm sure the OP will tell us when they eventually finds out but I have the feeling that perhaps the OP's mum felt harassed by the neighbours and scared that the cats might fight again so decided to get rid of her cat to avoid further problems?

If it was my mother, I would go and knock on the neighbours' door, tell them that, according to the law, cat owners are not liable for damages caused by their animals, that as my mother felt she had to have the cat pts I know they put her under a lot of pressure and that if they don't leave her alone I will go to the police for harassement and attempt to fraudulently acquire money from a vulnerable woman.

Another animal loses its life because of human stupidity!

ETA: Just want to say I'm not having a go at the OP or her mother.
