Lost wallet - found and returned!!

  • I lost my phone on a night out last year but some bloke found it and I was able to arrange to meet him the next day and get it back. I was so grateful, with hindsight I wish I'd got him a couple of beers to say thanks! It did give my mam a shock though when she answered my phone in the middle of the night and got a bloke explaining I'd lost my phone!

When I was 17 I found a wallet on a train under the seat opposite me. Had student cards, driving licence, ten quid, in etc so I rang the University mentioned and got them to pass on a msg. The fella called me and arranged to come into my work. I was most embarrassed when he showed up with a bunch of flowers and a box of choccies for me! I nearly died of embarrassement ( I worked on the tills in WHSmith).

I would never dream of taking anything from a found wallet not then or now, so it was nice to be rewarded for my honesty as all my collegues said, but to me it was just standard what I should do, and didn't expect anything in return.

I've found phones etc since and got them returned to their owners.

However something strange happened to me once, I lost my digital camera when I was getting out a taxi at a concert, didn't realise till it had driven off and no idea of the taxi firm, then got a call from a lady who had found it with my rail card in the case with my number on. I was so relieved cause I was studying photography at college and had some nice photos on there I hadn't yet had a chance to save. I explained this to the lady and she arranged to send it back to me, I told her to include her address and I would return the postage costs - which I did. When I got the camera back, it was in one piece, but the photos were all deleted and the only thing on the camera was a picture of who I assume to be the lady, pulling a silly face :O I was quite confused but didn't feel I could ask her why she had deleted all my photos :(

I laugh about it now but at the time I was a bit freaked out!

girl at work found an iphone on the bus, managed to return it to a young lad.... he didnt even say thanks :( ...

shes lost hers about 7 times and never found it again

How on earth do you lose a £300+ phone 7 times? I guess that is one of the reasons I posted because I have never lost my wallet, phone or keys no matter what state I may be in at the end of the night!

I did fall off my bike on a return journey home after being out and realised that I had lost my £25 Samsung Mp3 player - I wasn't best pleased!!

My sister has lost her keys more than once resulting in my dad having to fork out for a locksmith. Not happy.

Also when waiting for a bus directly opposite a police station and with no one else there I spied a fiver blowing about in the wind a bit like the carrier bag in American Beauty. I stamped on it and pocketed it.

In that case I surmised that it was "finders keepers" even though I know that isn't actually a law I have so little faith in the police that I distrust them that much I would not be happy leaving a found fiver with them without thinking they would spend it and not even record it!! I am sorry but I am not exaggerating about the police in our locality.

They let a murderer get away with murder and remain free for 5 years even though he was the prime suspect. He has only just been recently charged!! We have been burgled twice and had 3 bikes stolen - did anyone ever get charged - our property back? Don't make me laugh!!!

Although it was good of the police to allow one of our bikes to end up in their "police auction" without even bothering to contact the victim of the crime!!! :T I had to prove that it was our bike they were selling, I had inserted a note in the seat tube with details only I could have known. Did I get an apology? Pigs might fly!!!

That is confusing and I have no idea why all your photos would be deleted. Perhaps she found it when she was tanked up and they decided to show off / have a laugh but then when she sobered up her conscience kicked in?

I know you lost the photos and they were probably one offs but you still got the camera back. What were you supposed to say to her? Thanks for returning my camera, what the hell do you think you are doing deleting my photos and pulling stupid faces?!!! I want compensation!!

I don't think so as when I spoke to her on the phone she said she had got in the taxi after being at her class in social work... so it was even weirder?!

The photo was clearly taken by herself as it was close up, she looked like a fairly normal woman age between 20-30, just pulling a stupid face, and it was outside in a park or something so it wasn't as though it was a night out, it was during the day.

    I will never know!

I found a wallet a couple of years ago. I went through all their cards and a couple of personal documents they had in there. I cloned their identity and then handed the wallet in (I even got a £10 reward!).

I now have a £25,000 loan in their name, plus I have used their identity on a couple of drunk driving cases. One of the best things I've ever done :)

That is very strange, maybe she thought it would be fun to take a pic of herself so you could see the person who'd rescued your camera (which is fair enough) but in doing so deleted the rest by accident? Just doesn't make sense otherwise, a malicious person would surely just keep the camera!

I don't tend to lose my stuff (touch wood!) but I've found lots of mobiles, usually in pub toilets. I'm useless at working other people's phones so I always hand them in to the staff and hope the person who lost it will retrace their steps and get it back.

I once had a bloke in front of me use a cash machine and then walk off after the money came out. There was a lot there as well, loads of £20 notes. My OH snatched it all up before anyone else nearby could nick it, and ran after him. He was obviously very grateful and a little embarassed! Personally I wouldn't expect a reward as I see it as my moral obligation to return things. I am shocked by how many people have had people take their stuff back without saying thank you though!

I'm probably alone in this but I find it distateful when someone, as in the OP, returns a lost item but leaves contact details. It smacks of fishing for a reward.

Not always, they could simply be ensuring it was safely returned to the owner? Once a lady found my wallet (no money just cards as always) and returned it to my bank leaving her number. The bank phoned me and gave me her number once I collected it, I phoned her to say thank you and she said she'd only left her number as she didn't trust the bank to actually return it and was going to chase it up if she didn't get a call off me! Bless her
