Lost wallet - found and returned!!

Hi,
just a post about something good that happened to me.

I lost my wallet the other day - first time I have ever done it. Had all my bank cards, store cards, driving license etc and £10 in it.

I knew where I had lost it as when I got in the car had trouble shutting the door - my wallet had fallen out of my shorts pocket.

Phoned the store where I knew I had lost it outside but they had no knowledge of it. Had to cancel my cards and I have to say that Natwest were most UNHELPFUL in letting me cancel my card. After getting my full name, account number, sort code, branch location, address and phone number they still wouldn't do it. Like a thief is going to want to CANCEL a stolen card!!

Anyway I also informed the police to see if any good spirited person had handed it in. They hadn't.

I was resigned the the fact that I had lost the tenner and my cards and would have to shell out for a new wallet and new driving license.

Imagine my shock when I returned home yesterday (we had been staying away) and there was my wallet on the doormat and a note asking to phone the person - Derrick!

I phoned him immediately and expressed my gratitude. Thanks again Derrick if you read these boards!!

Everything was in there, including the tenner - which in all honesty I wouldn't have begrudged him if he had taken it as long as I got the other bits back.

The point of the post is that it restored my faith in human nature quite a bit. Not everyone is dishonest or on the take and for someone as pessimistic and cynical as me it made me really happy.

I get irate if I let someone go on the road and they make no ackowledgement fuming that I will never let anyone go ever again! I guess it is a strain to raise your hand when you quite clearly are playing with a certain part of your anatomy.

Anyway - praise and rant over. Sorry if it was a bit boring and pointless.

Cheers :o

    Good to hear it.

Have to say, however, if I found a wallet I would do exactly the same. It's not all bad people out there.

If I was ever in that position I wouldn't steal anything that didn't belong to me and would make every effort to return the wallet before even going to the police.

I wouldn't even have been disappointed if the tenner had gone - I was willing to give the guy who found the wallet that anyway.

I don't know if it would of been different if there was £100 plus in the wallet and I don't really care.

I do know that if I found a wallet or purse and it had 100 pennies or 100 pounds in it I would return it in the state I found it.

In my case the wallet was actually dropped outside a shop in the same road I live in so wasn't a great distance for the finder.

However my partner told me when they found a womans purse with about £40 in it at a car boot. They found her address which was about 10 miles away. Drove round there and returned it and the woman didn't even thank them!! That would pi55 me off!!

I once found a train pass on the pavement but it had no address on but a name so I contacted the local radio station to see if they could broadcast it in hope that the person was listening they wouldn't put it out so I looked in the phone directory for the surname and for near the location I found it I found one number and rang it and luckily it was the right person the lady answered and it was her daughters she hadn't even realised that she had lost it, I took it round 10 minutes later even though it was out of my way I got a thank you and a bottle of wine (I don't drink though) Nice gesture though!

Glad you got your wallet back my step dad lost his wallet on the golf course he plays every week and never got it returned same with his mobile phone. There are some nice and there are some nasty people isn't there

I found a wallet in the car park at London Gateway service station late one evening. I don't like to hand anything in to anyone other than the police as (perhaps unfairly) I simply don't trust strangers anymore.

The wallet had a business credit card in, so I looked up the business on Companies House and the registered address was only about 3 miles from home so I knocked on the door and handed it over to the owner's parents. Chappie took about 2 weeks to call and seemed more suspicious that I had found his (parents) address online than thankful that I'd returned his wallet. Oh well.

I would of happily bought him a few drinks. The thing is I felt a bit awkward phoning him up. I lost the wallet on Sunday and it was probably returned then but I didn't get back home till Tuesday. He may of thought that I was just being rude but I did phone him immediately when I got back.

I mentioned the tenner still being in there and expressed my gratitude in buckets. He did thank me for phoning him and we never really got round to any "reward".
