I also fully intend to persue a refund. I will watch this thread with interest to see if anything useful comes up about how to do it. And hopefully filter out all the unpleasant people that are revelling in other people's misfortune.

The fact is that people have paid for something in good faith that was supposed to be valid for 10 years and it has been taken away. If a private company behaved this way, Martin would be on their back and we would all be reporting them to Trading Standards.

Actually I'm fairly confident that if a private company behaved this way - ie went under/bankrupt/defunct whatever you want to call it. Martin would say something along the lines of "Only buy from a company you have confidence in or use a credit card that you can take the issue up with". Incidentally if you did use a credit card you may stand a chance. I'd give it a go certainly. I've always found my credit card only too happy to bend over backwards when I hint that I'll go elsewhere.:A

You DO NOT need a biometric passport to get into the USA. Don't know where you got that idea from ??? Can you enlighten us ???

You DO need however a MRZ abled passport (machine readable zone) which is; the characters in 2 lines on the page where your photo and details are.

As for the ID card..I am afraid no refunds are being given and they are valid for absolutely nothing now. Sorry, for those who have already got them.

I am not on hee to slag anyone or tit for tat responses. far too much of that on MSE these days. Facts are better than constant slagging and laughing at other peoples misfortunes guys. Come on ....we are meant to be on here to help and advise one another. :T

Look lets exercise a bit of common sense here.

Everyone knew an election was imminent, everyone knew Brown was on his way out. Everyone knew the Conservatives were the likely party to be elected. Everyone knew they would abolish the ID cards.

All those who went and got this hugely opposed ID card did so at their own risk and in the face of all the issues surrounding it.
It is not fair that now tax payers like myself have to bail you out because you made a mistake that was apparent for all to see.

  • I read with interest the political diatribe about ID cards. with respect people can try to point score til the cows come home, but the facts are that we as consumers purchased from a provider of services an article that was sold for a stated purpose and which in fact does not fit that purpose. The provider of that service has not gone bankcrupt and so now has a legal obligation to refund the money for that article or offer some form of exchange. It is clear that should the purchasers if id cards who now require a passport as a replacement could be offerred the amount in question as a discount against such a replacment and this would probably be acceptable for those purchasers. However, taking £30 pounds for goods not fit for purpose from a conusmer and then refusing to refund it is actually illegal. I am happy to get together with anyone who wants to take legal action on this matter. For those of you with limited 9ncome, who think you have scored a political victory now the tories are in even by default - buckle your seatbelts you are all in for the ride of your life!!!

    Maybe here:

Machine-readable passports issued or renewed/extended on or after 10/26/06: passports must have integrated chips with information from the data page.
Machine-readable passports issued or renewed/extended between 10/26/05 and 10/25/06: passports must have digital photographs printed on the data page or integrated chips with information from the data page.
Machine-readable passports issued or renewed/extended before 10/26/05: no further requirements.

Those newer requirements are for (simple) biometrics.

Well I think if these cards are no longer valid for any use, then the people who had paid for it should demand their money back.

Now I absolutely opposed this idea that we had to pay for these cards if the scheme went nationwide. I dont trust any govt and the way they use our data.
I certainly hate to pay for my data to be held on a database. Good riddance!

Can someone explain to me please - why exactly can National ID Cards already issued not be used as travel documents in Europe until the date of their expiry?

The UK National ID Card contains no less data than a UK passport. The application form asks for at least as much information as a British passport application, to confirm that the holder is a UK national.

I accept that the government wants to scrap the NIR. I accept that the government wishes to halt the issuance of new NICs. I just don't understand why cards already in existence are due to be deemed invalid for EEA / Swiss travel.

Because they are no longer supported as official documentation.

I don't buy that. I understand that the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats are against the spirit of the National Identity Register and of compulsory identity cards and, for this reason, they are scrapping the NIR and the issuance of any new cards. That's fine.

But I fail to see why (other than out of principal?), the government are removing the validity of existing NICs as European travel documents. The UK NIC and the photo page of the UK passport are identical.
