National ID Cards

Hi All,
Not sure if this is in the correct section, but here goes.
I'm a firm believer in the National ID cards. I appreciate that some aren't, but I believe it would help the society at present.
I was selected as one of the first people to get a card, but now the Govt. are planning to scrap them.
To get my card, it involved a 120 mile trip each way, and £30 for the card. Does anyone know what will actually happen? Are they cancelling the cards, or are they just not issung any more cards? If they cancel, can we reclaim costs incurred? I would have thought as the cards are a 10 year card, that you would be entering a 10 year contract with them that this card would be a form of identity and for travel purposes for the valid time?
Any constructive advice would be greatly apprecaited.

I read in the Guardian or the Independent this morning, can't remember we get both papers delivered, the database is to be scrapped - all information deleted - so there will be no ID associated with the card.
Furthermore there was a story of some senior home office civil servant trying to withdraw money from her bank account with it and this was declined. They said she'd need her passport or drivers license.
So I think it would be safe to assume that since the database will be scrapped, thus rendering the little chip on it void, there will be no ID to pair up with the card so I would imagine it wont let you use it for travel or anything else, furthermore I cannot see you getting any money back from it, associated costs etc. You could write to the Home Office and see though, that would be what I would do.0 -

The card was never the problem, it was the database behind it that was the issue.
Everything I've read suggests you've thrown your money away and i fully expect you'll get nothing back cash wise.
At least you get your fingerprints back to private again (maybe).0 -

I've read the scheme is to be scrapped, all issued cards will be useless and no refunds, as already stated - an expensive ice scraper lol.0 -
There are 30,000 individuals in Manchester who've forked out £30 each for an ID Card which is worthless.
If you are one of these unfortunates, or if you just want to take Proactive Steps to Protection yourself from ID Theft (Application) Fraud, then check out this sites and the media links

The answer is now on the BBC.

The National Identity Card scheme will be abolished within 100 days with all cards becoming invalid, Home Secretary Theresa May has said.
The bill to axe the cards and the ID register will be the first put before parliament by the new government - with a target of becoming law by August.
The 15,000 people who voluntarily paid £30 for a card since the 2009 roll out in Manchester will not get a refund.
