Can we get this working properly?

in Techie Stuff
Good day. I have pulled this machine out of the loft, its my ex's old pc, its not been started for 18 months, and last night I 'think' I updated it with new versions. I would like it to be working as best as it can. What should I do?

I also have problems with my laptop but I will sort this one out first and start a new thread for that. Thanks

    Scan for nasties then scan to tell us whats running ~

    Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
    Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
    Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
    Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

    reboot
    Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD THIS VERSION')

    Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
    (do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

    As advised by RIK scan for nasties first and then once clear check Windows updates again, download the latest critical updates including IE8.

    Also try the scanner on Secunia for latest updates/patches for Java, Adobe (if you use it) flashplayer etc.

    another thing to do would be to physically clean it to get rid of any dust built up inside the case and on the fans (plenty of how-tos if you google it so you dont do any damage)

    install Ubuntu on it instead of windows :D - yes i know Linux spam but is the best solution in my mind to get it running the best it can

    on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
    30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

    Computer seems fine. How much RAM does it have?

    If you wish to get it running better uninstall all the toolbars
    Uninstall ZONEALARM SPYBLOCKER (Also a toolbar)
    ZONEALARM FIREWALL and switch on windows firewall
    AVG then use the 32 bit AVG removal tool
    http://www.avg.com/download-tools

    and install AVIRA in its place ~

    Download AVIRA (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/

    then give it a clean ~
    Download CCLEANER
    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim
    Run the CLEANER scan (UNTICK 'cookies')
    Then run the REGISTRY scan (Backup the registry when it asks)
