Have any of you seen the ace of cakes tv programme on telly? Its based in America their cakes are HUGE!!! heres the website http://www.charmcitycakes.com/
The question I have is what is the white stuff that they use around the cake to keep the icing smooth?? I think it's royal icing if that helps
Steph xx
Love ace of cakes!
I think your talking about the dirty icing. A layer of buttercream to cover the cake to lock in crumbs and level out before the fondant goes on.0 -
That must be it lol I wondered what it was!!
Have you seen that other show the Cake off show?? They are fantastic!

Thank you odollybird and awesome2
The baubles were made as run outs - basically, you draw the design onto greaseproof paper, pipe an outline with royal icing, allow it to dry then use runny royal icing (extra eggwhite not water and no glycerine) to make it dry very hard. The red baubles were done with red icing, the gold ones were white, then painted with edible gold paint. When both were dry I brushed them with egg white and sprinkled with edible glitter.
The cat was a run out done in the same way as the baubles and then hand painted with powdered colours mixed with vodka not water to get the right consistency.
Both were left to dry for a week before transferring onto the cake. My first attempt at run outs so was quite pleased with the results.0 -
Wow just found this thread and spent all evening looking through! Loads of inspiration! Here are some of mine I have done recently

I havent read all the thread so apoligies if it has already been said or asked! But
How do you all transport your taller cakes? I dont have a tub big enough for the big cupcake ones for example, anyone know where I can get a tall tin?
And my top tip for cupcakes (I have learnt since baking these) to get them all the same size is to use an icecream scoop to get the mix into the cases, great tip I recieved from my American friend who is into cakes also!!Slimming World Member - Started 05/02/150 -
When I used to make large cakes for my old job we bought large plastic cake boxes from Bookers cash & carry. Clear bottom bit with a white lid, they were really handy when transporting a lot of cakes.£2 Savers Club 2011 (putting towards a deposit

Love seeing all your cakes - I do a bit of baking - but this was Hubbys first attempt at cake decorating for DS2 8th Birthday last year - I bought as asda photo cake ( without the photo - from Lightbody factory shop) so gave him a nice smooth base.MFW start figures - August 2010 - 65,303 O/P Aug 280 Sept 499 Oct 499 Nov 499 Dec 499 Jan 6205 Feb 444 March 444 April 444 May444 June444 July444
