Hi All,
I'm hoping for some advice please if you dont mind? One of best friends is emigrating to Oz in 3 weeks and we are having a farewell party for her and her family. I would love to make a cool farewell cake for them and though about the Oz theme.
Was wondering whether to do an oz shaped cake or a large roasting tin type one with an oz outline?
Want to make thing like kangaroos, boomerangs etc to decorate with but may try to buy plastic figures as have never done any icing work.
To date the most ambitious cake I've done was a pair of boobs for a mates husbands birthday!!
Thanks in advance,
Allison.
here are some ideas when I googled it
there are loads of pictures to give you inspiration0 -
Thanks SO much bindiboo, I've decided to go with a madeira as I thnk it will hold the weighto of icing etc and retain its shape well after cutting to shape. I've managed to get a kangaroo, koala, oz flag, croc, roo's crossing sign and couple of other bits for decorating the cake. Am only missing the sydney opera house so am going to try and make one - EEK!!!
The one on blue icing and crushed bicuits for sand looks awesome so might try and recreate that. Whatever I manage I'll try my best to remember to take a pic and post it here for you all to see!!!WW Start Weight 18/04/12 = 19st 11lbsWeight today = 17st 6.5lbsLoss to date 32.5lbs!!!0 -
Haven't been on much or made much lately other than my xmas cake. I made it for my nephews really and they were chuffed with it. It's the first time I've done any modelling and I really enjoyed it, reminded me of being little and having the plasticine out! I got loads of baking, cake decorating and biscuit books for Christmas so can't wait for some time to have a play!0

Sorry if this has been posted already, did start reading through all posts, but gave up!
I want to make Christmas cakes to give as gifts next year. I have a recipe that I use every year and this is the recipe I want to use but it makes a pretty big cake. Do I need to adjust the timings if I'm splitting the mixture between tins, and if so by how much?
Thanks guys0 -

if using smaller tins, i would more likely drop the temp and add extra wrap, rather than reduce the cooking time - fruit cakes are best cooked long and low
what size tin do you normally use, and how small are you going?

Thanks, not sure what my tin sizes are, i think they'll be about a quarter of the original size (they're all in boxes around the house while we recover from a flood:()0 -
Hi all ive not posted on this thread before. There are some beautiful cakes ive got to say i think all of you are very talented!
Im currently on maternity leave and would love to learn to bake. before now ive only ever baked out of a box........shameful. Ive bought a giant cupcake mould and was wondering if i used a normal cupcake recipe but made enough mix for the equivalent of 24 cupcakes if this would be enough to fill it? I would like to make different flavoured cakes you see but like i say ive not ever baked (apart from at school and for some reason my buns turned out like sunken rocks even the teacher couldnt fathom out why! i havent tried baking since!)
I was considering buying a cupcake book and using recipes out of there but on a bigger scale.
Thanks in advance for your help
