If you're new to making cake pops, then you're better off using a cake mix (500g) and ready made frosting. Use about 3/4s of the frosting mix, or they'll be too sloppy.

Yes candy melts are the best for covering them by a mile. You need to shop around though as some places are dearer than other.
You need to chill them before coating so they're firm. They shouldn't be frozen though, so don't leave them in the freezer for too long :D

Most importantly, don't forget to show us some pics when they're done

Ohhh fab, thank you sooo much.. What sort of frosting would you recommend?? xx

Thank you so much for the link hun, just ordered myself a set of tappits after seeing cakes with letters and numbers, they were a lot cheaper on this site than on ebay. Got a few basic tools as well while I was at it.

Brilliant cakes everyone as always, loving the guinness cupcakes!!
You're so very special, I wish I was special

Betty Crocker is nicer than shop's own. When you get used to the quantities and how much frosting to use, then you can use your own recipes :)

Im up late reasearching for my weeks cakes. I'm wondering if I have taken too much on this week!! Tuesday is a london wasps rugby ball cake, thursday is a 3D peugeot 206, Friday is a 3D 10" tall tardis and a 3 tier topsy turvy cake and friday is a 3D pool table with 40 matching cupcakes.... and the continuos cupcake supply for local garage.
OH SH*T.... I have taken on too much now it is typed in a list. ARGH!!! Oh and I use a aga for baking so can bake 3 sheets then have to leave the oven to warm up before baking more! Doing as much as possible tomorrow. Like all the decorations and bake the cupcakes and get them in the freezer. I think also the sponge cake for the tardis might get baked tomorrow and frozen.
Better get to sleep - might be the longest nights sleep for the next few days. thankfully the kids are back at school this week and my youngest is in playschool for 2 hours on mon and tues!

Any help please? My daughter has just started doing novelty cake decorating. She did a short course at college and a friend has ordered a Fireman Sam cake for next week. She practised during the week and did fine with the cake and Fireman Sam figure in Gum Paste but tried for hours to do the helmet but it didn't look right.
She's now looking online for just a stand up figure instead but they are quite expensive with the P&P included.
Any tips on how to do the helmet would be appreciated.
