hi girls, sorry ive read all the posts but can only remember a few!! in answer to the cornflour/fruit cake question:
cornflour goes mouldy when using it for covering a fruit cake, it reacts with the acidity of the fruit.

as for clikstix....really easy to use and much more user friendly than the tappits :) you just cut out the letter press the back and out it pops!

im just currently sorting through the latest cake pics so will post when done :)

I just made some Mars bar cupcakes, but all the Mars bar sank to the bottom and stuck to the paper case:(

Where did I go wrong? Should I have used muffin cases instead of cake cases and put a bit more mixture in before I added the slice of Mars bar?

They tasted very nice, but we had to chew the melted Mars bar off the paper ;)

Just a thought, as money saving diva said....you may of put too much in... I used the small funsize bars and halved them for each cupcake.
Pricey buying them this way £2.44 for bag of 16.

  • I have just got the Wilton 1m nossle that has been mentioned loads on this thread. I used it for the first time yesterday and it's fab! So easy for a beginner to make fab looking cupcakes!

Thank you. Does anyone know anywhere that stocks these (not online)?

Could you ladies please tell me what you use to colour your buttercream....for the Christening I used blue liquid food colouring and it was nowhere near baby blue colour more a washed out greeny colour...I think even if I had poured the whole bottle in it would'nt of been a baby blue. Sorry I'm posting a lot but trying to get it right before I have more cupcakes to do next month. I see they have plenty of those wilton 1m nozzles on Ebay may treat myself and even get some disposable bags.

fantastic cake...i bet the loved it :)

chery....you used paste colour, and the reason why it went green is because the buttercream is a yellowy colour to begin with so yellow n blue, make green :)
you can buy something called superwhite, which turns your buttercream white first before you add colour :) xxx

I did n't use muffin cases and mine came out no problem...I put a good dollop of the mixture in first..... they were a great hit at the Christening. I've found out something anyway.....I'm absolutely rubbish at piping buttercream on cupcakes. I bought a cheapy icing set at Wilkinsons and I'm blaming my tools...now at the bottom of the bin. Don't know whether to invest in a good icing set...but probably still be rubbish at it. It looks that easy to do but I made a right pigs ear out of it. So a lot of the toppings were changed to either melted chocolate or white icing.

    Dont give up!!
I bought myself a faringdon icing set from Amazon ages ago, and I had one or two goes with it and then it never got used! (I used to use a knife for 'spikey' icing!) but recently I have got it back out again, and been practising and practising! OK so my piped icing isnt the best but its a lot better than when I first had a go! :)
So much for 'Money Saving' ;)
