    Evening

I am new to this thread but have been making cupcakes for a few months, firstly for myself then word got around so have made some for 2 christenings and a couple of birthdays

I now fancy trying to decorate a cake but I have a couple of questions please

Is it easy to cover a square or round cake in fondant?
Has anyone tried the clikstix alphabet cutters and if so what did you think as I want to get an alphabet

    Thank you

PS. Absolutely gorgeous cakes on here

    Hi Kirsty262

I would say it is relatively easy to ice cakes with fondant. You will need to crum coat it first with a thin layer of buttercream this helps make the cake even and places a layer for the fondant to stick to. Dont roll the fondant too thick as it rips, if you re doing a square cake I would say to do the corners first the you will neeed to smooth it. You can do this but ussig a smoothing tool or you could just use a ball of fondant and run it over the cake in circle motions until it is smooth.
Nuttymummy uses clikstix so she will be albe to give you her toughts I ahve just orderd a full set of groovy letters and numbers carnt wait to give them a go

If you go on to youtube you will find loads of tutorials to help

I wouldsay ther is not much differnce but I prefer a square you just need to get the corners right. Once you drape the fondant over the cake lift it at the corners and smooth down and into the corner until it sits right

Making sugarpaste is quite fiddly I believe. You need glycerine, gelatine and glucose. This is Lindy Smith's instructions

Do you have a supermarket nearby? Most of the big ones sell it

I just made some Mars bar cupcakes, but all the Mars bar sank to the bottom and stuck to the paper case:(

Where did I go wrong? Should I have used muffin cases instead of cake cases and put a bit more mixture in before I added the slice of Mars bar?

They tasted very nice, but we had to chew the melted Mars bar off the paper ;)

It sounds like the cases were to shalow you maybe need to use muffin cases and add a good spoonfull of mixture to the bottom first. Perhaps the chunk was to bif foe the amount of filling.
Never mind we all have disasters just think of all theyummy cake we can eat as we keep trying:rotfl:
